American students make beeline for admissions, into Indian institutions.

Chennai: The number of US students coming to India this year has jumped nearly 45% with more Americans opting for short-term courses — a semester or a subject with a popular professor or college. But their total number is still below 4,000 — a small fraction of the over-1 lakh Indian students going to the US every year.

“Especially doctorate and graduate students come to India, just for a semester or a few months of research with a scholar,” said US-Indian Educational Foundation executive director Adam Grotsky. Speaking about the growing exchange of students, US consulate in Chennai said it’s the performance of Indian students and scholars in the US that may have inspired the trend. “Usually when a faculty member works in the US and returns, a few of his former students or contacts come down to spend a semester with them,” said Grotsky.

Most students coming to India choose to pursue specializations in the field of science and engineering along with social sciences, especially politics, anthropology and public health, says consulate information officer Anand Krishna.

Popular destinations include metros such as Delhi and Mumbai and hi-tech cities such as Hyderabad and Pune.
Varanasi and Dharmasala also see a regular stream of students coming in to study sociology and anthropology.

Experts say that this new trend could be a result of students beginning to look at India as a growing economy :) and also due to the continuing recession faced by the US economy.

The US and Indian governments too seem to be encouraging this trend

The Obama-Singh 21st century knowledge initiative – a $10 million fund to support students and scholars from both countries – and the tripling of the Fulbright scholar programme have supported American students seeking to expand their knowledge in India.

HaHaHa. Its not as simple as that. There are a few students who are no better than "hippie" tourists, but that is a miniscule percentage. There are large numbers (and ever increasing numbers at that) who are coming to India and enrolling in post-grad courses. That is the kind of courses that see serious students.

But most importantly, there fast increasing numbers of professionals coming to India to work in India. While it seemed an exotic idea earlier, now it is a well sought after assignment. Easy to see these people even in 2nd tier metros like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. Since I know many of them, I know why they are in India. Simply because of great opportunities and quality of life. Some of them are even investing in homes to retire to. Retirement in the west is not an exciting prospect for them anymore!
The times indeed are a-changin. :azn:
