I seen quite a few articles from different authors that wants America to back off, or at least meet China half way. Their reasoning is China is growing too big to contain, and war is too costly. The interests in Asia for America is not vital, while for China it is. All points true.
However, if America backs off, the tension will not end, it will just change, it may go to an arena where America has vital interests, while China just has interests.
China is the largest trader of Africa, getting there in South America, investing heavily in South Asia and Middle East, making strides in Central Asia, while obviously heavy investment in Europe. All this shows even at this point, China isn't content, and nor could we afford, to stay in Asia. For Chinese currency to increase in usage, for the Chinese economy to continue to advance and for the Chinese people to continue to get richer, China must have more of the world's pie than ever before.
The meeting China half way theories are wrong, because their desired effects are never going to come to fruition. China may not want to be the world police, but China does want to be rich, and Americans should know exactly what that requires.
I can't say what America should do, none of them sounds good in an American perspective. This is a battle of supremacy, and in an ideal world we can work together, but in this world of finite resources, may the best man win.
