AMCA :: Fifth Generation Fighter Under Development in India

That would be rational thinking, but that's sadly not the case with DRDO, ADA, IAF or IN. They want everything made in India and alone, they want it to be the best and they want it for all forces. Such a combination can't work!

Then I think by the time the AMCA gets done, America would be flying 7th generation fighter jets

I think with the LCA program, India is now capable of manufacturing Mig 21 kind of 3rd generation jets, with some 4th generation avionics. That is my evaluation of DRDO's capabilities. A 4.5 generation fighter aircraft took France with all its experience, 20 years to develop. I am sure DRDO's ridiculous attempts to jump generations in an attempt to develop aircraft will only end up as a misadventure. We might end up buying more FGFAs to cover for the AMCA's failures. Thats what is gonna happen.

dont underestimate your scientists, as far as MIG21 is considered, its Airframe is still considered the best designed airframe.

india develop fighter plane in Marut airframe was capable to withstand Mach 2 at that time if powered by powerful engine which airforce didn't noticed that time.

That's not correct, we mastered the 4th to 4.5 gen techs like fly by wire, glass cockpits, certain avionics but also the composite airframes and RAM coatings. And as the prototypes already show in the weapon trials, it as capable as the Jags in strike payload, while beeing a multi role fighter, with the above mentioned 4th to 4.5 gen advantages.
A 5th gen fighter on the other side is a whole other story and we will need much more knowledge in core fields like design, engine, radar and avionics to make it a successful development, that's why we can't contibute much to the FGFA as well.

If India want to do all the 5th generation related R&D without looking at the T-50 prototype, then we have to wait again at least 10-15 years before first prototype fly in the air. I hope I am wrong and we could see it much earlier.

That's why I say, either concentrate on AMCA with foreign partners like Dassault and Embraer as a carrier fighter and focus on the FGFA / AURA combo for IAF, which would make MKI the next fighter that needs to be replaced by 2030. By then we not only have fully absorbed Rafale and FGFA techs, but will have the experience and know how to go for more capable techs and capabilities alone (6th gen fighter, whatever that mean). Developing another 5th fighter for the air force is just a waste of time and money and won't even benefit our industry other than to say, we have an indigenous stealth fighter. But security of India and Indian interest should have the main importance, nor pride for indigenous developments!

I really hope HAL comes out with a surprise like how they impressed the world with the LCH design.

I really really am praying. Can't trust the government with anything.

Dude I can gaurentee that the plane will fly by 2015 or latest 16. But what will happen in 10 yrs after first prototype takes to sky is something I don't know and honestly don't wanna know right now.

Why not Japan?

No No. I am not underestimating. Who said Mig 21 is not good? I was merely saying because India had not developed a 3rd or a 4th gen plane before they jumped to building a 4.5 generation plane. BTW HAL Marut was designed by a German engineer, not HAL.

If we have, then its all good.

If HAL would be in charge alone, they would at least try to follow the Dhruv/LCH development way, but DRDO and ADA are there too, which makes it more complicated.

I was referring to AMCA not T-50. I don't think first AMCA flight happens before 10 years from now.

Loll flying a prototype is not the hard part. Tejas got funding in 1991 and 1995 the plane was ready to fly. Reason it didn't fly till 2001 was the fly by wire which India had to develop on its own. So there are no such problems in AMCA. Design is prolly done by now and first prototype should be out in 3 yrs.

Now avionics is the part where India will suck, and take another decade to get this plane into induction. As sancho says better to integerate it with foreign avionics.

I think this is perfect.

Build the platform. And source the other stuff from other nations and JVs. Like LCH. This is a perfectly reasonably strategy.

Slowly indigenous it more with time.

Now we have JV companies like HALBIT(HAL + ELBIT JV) Avionics that's bringing tech from Israel to India.

I hope HALBIT Avionics plays a role in AMCA.

I have the video guys, but it doesn't have audio stream. I am converting it to contain relevant info and upload it soon.

How's it going pal?

Am eagerly awaiting the final product!

The IAF had aparently asked for a very advanced cockpit on the AMCA:

Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) will be its cockpit and man-machine interface. For starters, unlike the cluttered, resoundingly less-than-fourth-generation cockpit of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Tejas), the AMCA cockpit could have a panoramic active-matrix display. Next, switches, bezels and keypads could be replaced with touch screen interfaces and voice commands. Finally, what the team wants is for the AMCA pilot to have a helmet-mounted display system that allows the jettisoning of a HUD from the AMCA cockpit altogether
