Only 25,000 sq ft (2322sq meters vs the 10,000 sq meters of other supermarkets) ...but well they finally did it. Bye bye cashiers and barcodes..

Bellevue is the site of Amazon’s first full-size grocery store with technology that allows customers to bypass checkout lines as they exit the store. The Amazon Fresh store opens Thursday in The Marketplace at Factoria, 3901 Factoria Square Mall SE, the company announced in a blog this week.

Customers can use the new “Just Walk Out” technology or check out the traditional way using with store employees.

The Just Walk Out technology was pioneered in the much smaller Amazon Go stores before its rollout to a full-size grocery format.

Just Walk Out technology employs computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, and gives customers the option to pick up what they want, and skip the checkout when they’re done. Anyone can take advantage of the technology, which connects to customers’ Amazon account or credit card. Customers are prompted at the store’s entry gates to choose if they want to use Just Walk Out shopping or the traditional checkout lanes, the blog said.

Customers who opt for Just Walk Out shopping can enter the store in three ways: They can scan the QR code in their Amazon app, use Amazon One to scan their palm, or insert a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account. Each option will open the Just Walk Out gates. Once inside, customers shop like normal. Anything they take off the shelf is automatically added to their virtual cart, and anything they put back on the shelf comes out of their virtual cart. When finished shopping, customers using the Just Walk Out experience scan or insert their entry method again to exit, the blog explained.

“Bringing Just Walk Out technology to a full-size grocery space with the Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue showcases the technology’s continued ability to scale and adapt to new environments and selection,” Dilip Kumar, vice president of physical retail and technology at Amazon, said in the blog. “I’m thrilled it’ll help even more customers enjoy an easier and faster way to shop and can’t wait to get their feedback on this latest Just Walk Out offering.”

The first Amazon Fresh store opened last August. There are now 13 stores across California, Illinois, and Virginia, with the 14th and newest, in Bellevue, the first in Washington.

A blog FAQ asked if Just Walk Out technology would appear at other Amazon Fresh stores or at Whole Foods Market. The answer: “For now we’re excited to see how customers like the Just Walk Out shopping experience at the Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue, and we’ll go from there.”

Amazon Fresh Bellevue will be open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Its grand opening June 17-20 includes product giveaways, music, and more.

I have an Amazon Fresh store next to my place. The tech here is not fully like Amazon go store instead you get to pick an E-cart which scans whatever product you keep in it. The cart has an ability to search location of a specific product in aisles. But there is a limitation on the quantity of product you can pick if using E cart. It's good innovation but not optimal at the moment.

It sounds like they are dumping the cart thing.

What are the chances people would loot and plunder?Aren't Americans are too uncivilized for such technology?

We already have self-checkout (probably since 2000). Where I am it is common in most stores except places like Chinatown supermarkets and inner city areas where cheating/pilferering is common.

I think you’re confusing Americans with Indians
I just read very often Americans stealing from their neighbours , delivery personnel stealing packages as well as random people stealing unattended deliveries from amazon and such.

The lvl of autonomy in selfcheckout varies,in bangkok local grocery the self checkout still includes showing memo slip to a scanner or guard ,wherein Ningbo(china) ,a self-checkout can be total contactless.

According to stats, property crime rate is higher among white ,blacks, latinos by 5 times compared to Asians in the US,so I don't believe China towns are more unsafe when compared.

They don't check receipts at the door here.

I have NEVER seen a self-checkout in a Chinese Supermarket in the Boston area. If you can find one please post it here...but good luck to that. Trust me the Chinese/Asian cashiers scrutinize everything/everybody with a magnifying glass. They'd never trust another Chinese person to total their own bill in a million years.

Here's the checkout of a popular Chinese Supermarket that caters to mostly East Asians...no self-checkout

Here's the checkout at a very popular Korean Supermarket that caters to mostly Chinese/East Asians...no self-checkout

I read, most China towns are surrounded by gang areas, because they were formed initially in less expensive locations near traditionally gang ridden areas.Property thief cases in china town are by visitors not by fellow local residents .
There would be vending machine all over US if it was so safe.

WTF? There are no gang areas near these two stores. In fact look at the demographics of the suburb the Korean store is in. Just a tiny token black/latino population.

Unfortunately some demographics get a bad rep for being pilferers while others are known for being cheaters. 99% of the people who shop in that store are East Asians.

Not sure what you mean by this.
Do you mean those vending machines in Japan that are on every corner selling underwear and stuff?

We only have snack/drink vending machines here. The non-food ones aren't popular. Plus I think only the drink machines are waterproof.

I went to a Sun MIcrosystems in Berlin conference just before they went bust, there they demonstrated RIF technology and said that was the future of the Supermarkets. Then shortly after that Sun closed down. Seems like Amazon picked up where Sun left.

I'm not even sure they use those things much anymore. Maybe electronics in BestBuy.

Well Amazon is doing vision. Those RF things probably would get negative PR if found inside the packaging of a food item. "Little Johnny nearly choked to death on an RF tag inside his bag of Doritos..."

they are heavily engaging in imaging .. your assessment is correct. Also to sift out the fakes from China and other places that have plagued Amazon too,
