At 3:30 in the video, the narrator says China's "Free Lunch Program already extends to 36 million rural students."

Taiwan only has a population of 23 million people. Yet, Taiwan became incredibly prosperous because its residents focused on education. Taiwan consistently scores high on international tests like PISA.

China is investing in the future of 36 million poor rural students. Being well-fed during lunch will allow the students to focus on their studies. Those poor rural students on the Free Lunch Program represent 1 1/2 Taiwans.

Poor students know that their only path to a better future is to study hard. A significant percentage of those poor students will become outstandingly productive citizens, such as doctors and engineers.

I think China's Free Lunch Program will become one of Xi Jinping's most enduring achievements. Its effects will reverberate through the generations to make China stronger.

.
School lunches should be universally free.

That way the government can guarantee that all children are getting proper nutrition and have correct vitamins and proteins. Everyone eating the same food also builds comradery and cohesion by getting rid of socio economic differences in lunch food. Poor kids eat the same as rich kids.

Exactly. That's why it is better to standardize lunch (and perhaps afternoon snack) rather than asking parents to prepare lunch-boxes is a better policy.
