Indeed, but i am willing to bet with utmost respect that he is directly a beneficiary of MQM's patronage. Parties like MQM operate as a Mafia, they hand out favours and benefits to gain public sympathy. Or he might have family members that are part of MQM.

Very cool headed and reasonable although i do feel bad for him as he is fighting a loosing fight. No matter how much he tries to, i don't think he has managed to convince a single member that MQM is not a terrorist organization. The writing is on the wall, MQM's militant wing will be dismantled and Altaf Bhai is going to jail soon.

Just imagine a person XYZ working in a Factory as Floor Manager got Arrested in Suspicion due to being MQM Worker(Not much Active but Attending Party Meeting type) and remain in Custody for 3 months and then RELEASED without any Charges lost his job in the process, Ridiculed by Family and those who know him for something which he didnt do. Imagine this situation and then Read back what I have been talking about. This is something that worry's me because I have Met people like them.

Altaf demands ‘public referendum’ on Rangers operation

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Wednesday demanded that a ‘public referendum’ be held on the ongoing Rangers operation in Karachi, Express News reported.

Speaking to the media over the phone from his residence in London, Altaf said that it is crucial that a referendum be held to take public sentiments into account.

The MQM chief advised that a five-member committee be constituted, comprising Supreme Court and High Court judges, to organise the referendum.

Altaf’s statements come after the recent debacle the federal and Sindh governments seem to be involved in after the provincial chief executive hinted at withdrawing policing powers from the paramilitary Rangers force, which has been deployed in Karachi since the 90s.

On Tuesday, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah claimed that under the 18th constitutional amendment, the provincial government was bound to seek the legislative assembly’s approval before allowing Rangers to continue working under extended powers.

The statement comes in the wake of recent raids by Rangers at offices of different provincial government departments that have upset the political stakeholders. Four months ago, the paramilitary force was given special powers to detain suspects for 90 days. The permission expires today (Wednesday).

“There is a bottleneck in giving them extension in special powers to deal with terrorism,” he told reporters.

Following this, the MQM announced staging sit-ins outside the CM House against the ‘atrocities’ of Rangers.

In his address to party office-bearers on Tuesday, the MQM leader called upon the chief minister and the parliamentarians to table a bill in the Sindh Assembly for sending Rangers back to the borders.

He lamented that neither the chief minister nor the judiciary had taken notice of the Rangers’ allegations. “If the courts were independent, then action against Rangers for arresting men illegally would have been taken,” he said.

Just when I thought Altaf could sink no lower, I get this. He never demanded any referendum when MQM invited known criminals to join its ranks. Now when PakArmy's rangers are going against these criminal elements, he wants a referendum.

And public demands that Altaf plus his brother in corruption and mass murders Zardari should be hanged.

@Gazi bhai you agree with me that there is/was a responsibility on the shoulders of MQM party workers who are currently witnessing or had witnessed wrong doings (bhata khori, criminal activities etc) within the party and remain silent they should have at least raised their voices or informed the senior more seasoned and honest brass of MQM to perform a must needed introspect and put the party's direction on the right path. I agree that MQM supporters don't trust the establishment but don't you feel the suitable way to get out of this mess for MQM is to cooperate with Rangers to the best they can...rather keep isolating themselves. They should take full advantage of this situation and declare that we are willing to support the current operation and stand side by side with Rangers. IF the authorities provide us conclusive evidence of any worker involved in any time of criminal or anti-state activities we will ourselves support the punishment deemed necessary.

Secondly don't you think this is about time MQM supporters should look for "new" leadership which truly represent this party how can you justify Altaf Hussain to be the leader of party representing the most educated people, have you heard his telephonic khatabs ... seriously do they reflect leadership intellect.

On the other note; other parties who wished to broaden their vote bank in Karachi have to own the problems of Karachi as well...they have to come out of their comfort zones to show the common resident of Karachi that they feel their pain and the problems they face and stand by them irrespective of their past or present political and or ethnic affiliations.

Incorrect convicted criminals, no they are not innocent. Even harboring an alleged criminal is a crime, let alone providing him with shelter and safety.
