AL's votes static, BNP's jump

Swing voters make the difference; govt's popularity suffers jolt, reveals opinion survey on govt's 3-year performance

Three years ago, the Awami League came to power with perhaps the biggest political bang since independence with a four-fifths majority in parliament. Today much of that popularity has waned, reveals The Daily Star opinion survey on the government at the end of its three years in power.

On the other hand, the BNP which somehow limped to the election, suffering its biggest defeat with a mere 29 seats because of unabated misrule, now seems to have recouped much of its lost position.

And if the question of voting came right now, the AL would still be marginally ahead of the BNP by holding on to its core votes. But the BNP, which lost its ground quite significantly in the last election, has regained votes this time.

In this whole game of gaining votes it is very obvious, even mathematically, that a large section of the swing voters are now opting for the BNP.

The poll, fifth in a series, was conducted on 2,520 respondents in 44 of the 64 districts covering all seven administrative divisions. Designed by The Daily Star, it was conducted by the Centre for Strategic Research.

FIGURES SPEAK
The Daily Star conducted five political surveys including this one. The first one was done 100 days after the current government had come to power. The next four surveys were done one year (January 2010), one and a half years (August 2010), two years (January 2011), and three years after the incumbent government had been formed.

The Daily Star has been asking the question, "Which party you would vote for if an election was held now" for the last three surveys.

As our survey one and a half years ago showed, 41 percent respondents said they would vote for the AL if an election was held right then. One year ago, almost a similar 39 percent said so. This time after three years of the government, 39.7 percent said they would vote for the AL. This showed the AL has been able to hold its core vote bank steadfastly.

In comparison, only 20 percent said they would vote for the BNP one and a half years ago. One year ago, 22 percent endorsed the BNP. This time, 37 percent said they would vote for the BNP. This clearly showed the BNP has regained much of its votes, which it lost in 2008 election.

Now the question is if the AL retained its core votes at around 40 percent, then how did the BNP make the gain?

The answer lies in the segment of people who did not respond or said "I don't know" to the question of which party they would vote for if an election was held on the day. In the last two polls held at the completion of the government's one and a half years and two years, 25 percent people did not respond. They actually represented the swing voters. This time, this "no response" segment was down to 9 percent. So people who refrained from answering this time were reduced by 16 percent. Mathematically, this 16 percent this time opted to vote for the BNP. So the BNP has gained the swing votes.

As the situation now stands, the road is wide open for both the parties to win the next election. Which party will ultimately take the lead will depend on their performance in the next two years.

The survey also revealed that Sheikh Hasina's popularity as the prime minister has declined in the last one year quite significantly. Last year, 53 percent said they were happy with her performance. This year 39.4 percent said so.

But Khaleda Zia's popularity as the leader of the opposition has remained static at 30 percent.

People's perception about how the country is being governed has also gone through a dramatic change over the past year.

More people now think that the country is heading in the wrong direction.

The survey showed that people are not happy with the way the economy and price inflation are being handled. They are also worried about the law and order situation.

But the respondents were happy with the government's initiatives to improve power supply.

People's perception about corruption has also worsened as 44 percent now think that corruption has increased compared to 31 percent last year.

Again, i am no party-lover...but seems like BNP is gaining back their strength gradually. AL's actions in these 3 years, could not make much of a difference. They still hold their core votes, so you can expect that if things go worse in the remaining tenure...BNP will surely get ahead. Lets wait and watch!

Cheers!!!

Typical Bangladeshi attitude. Next election Khaleda Zia is coming after then in another next Election Shiekh Hasina will be back because the cycle is going on since 1991

AL is here to stay. It has a lot of backing from other countries like India, America and even Canada.

RAW seems not to be doing its job. Bad raw!

One notable observation....I was thinking that AL may get around or less than 10% of vote by the way AL is being bashed for its anti national activities in the PDF. But in contrary to that it got almost 41% vote.So does that 41% vote means that all these 41% people are anti national and they support transit treaty and friendship with India?????? This is really strange....

@ First of all who is the owner of this "Daily Star", obviously it is AL.

@ Even I will say that the general election of 1970 was also not fair. The reasons are :
1. It was probably in 1968/69 a pressure came from AL that all CSP officers from East Pakistan should be Bengali origin. As such with the advice of Munium Khan(governor of E.P) transfered all the West Pakistani CSP officers(at least DC/SP) to West Pakistan and all Bengali senior CSP officers were posted to East Pakistan. So, by the time election came all most all the key holders were Bnegali. It has some negative impact on the election.
2. Since Yahya Khan came to power by a secret military coup he never wanted that any fraction of Muslim Leaque should come to power. He silently freezed all the central fund of Convention Muslim Leaque(created by Ayub Khan).
3. Yahya Khan before the election dismissed almost 350/400 senior CSP officers.
4. Yahya Khan also restricted the activities of families of 22 families of Pakistan(Industrial Group).
5. Free hand election campaign of six points of AL was given to Sk Mujib.
6. Muslim oriented political parties like Muslim Leaque, Convention Muslim Leaque, Quyumi Muslim Leaque, Nizam-e-Islami, Pakistan DEmocratic Party, Pakistan Jammat-e-Islami all were campaigning separately. No effort was taken to unite them together. Rather military intelligence was working for their isolation.
7. Yahya made a secret understanding with Mujib to keep him as President. Later on Yahya also made a link with Butto.
8. No election campaign were allowed in East Pakistan by the Jamat-e-Islami and other Muslim oriented political parties in East Pakistan. Whenever they tried for camapaign many of their stages were burned. By seeing this Mollana Bashani, the leader of Pakistan National Party(NAP) bycotted the election. So, AL got the free hand and went unoppossed. I talked with many old people most of them are in the opinion that in the true sense it was not an election at all. All queit in the "Eastern Front".
9. All young generation be it even in the administration supported AL and every thing was within their control. It was a mandate by intimadation. It was a farse election since than the practice of intimadation election is going on in our country.

@ The election of 1973 was another farse. At that time all the muslim oriented political parties were banned. Only opposition party was JSD(Jatiya Samajtantric Dal) by Maj Jalil and Rob.

@ Then came the general election of 1977 under Martial Law. To some extend it was fair but again AL was in a very bad shape. Many of its leaders were in jail and amny fled away. In that election AL got only 39 seats out of 300.

@ The Presidential election of 1981 after Zia killing, it was fair where Dr Kamal Hossain(AL's candidate) was deafeated by President Sattar.

@ The parliamentary election of 1986 by Ershad was initially fair but once he saw that his party(Jatya Party) is not getting 2/3 majority he tried to manipulated some seats. He also bought the 15/18 independant candidates. In that election AL got something like 85 seats. The Presidential election of Ershad was completely farse and manipulated of the highest extent.

@ The general election of 1988 by Ershad was farse and manipulated where non of the opposition parties like BNP, AL and Jammat participated.

@ The general election of 1991 was free and fair where BNP got simple majority. But still I would say no justice was done to Ershad. He was put on jail and many of his party members. Still Ershad was elected in 5 seats while in custody. His party got some thing like 35 seats. To form a govt 151 seats is required. BNP also got some 148 but it was supported by Jamat(18 seats).

@ The election of Feb 1996 was completely farse as no major opposition participate. Soon, it was dissolved and just after a month a new free and fair election was held under Care-Taker govt was held. Apparently the election was free and fair but in many places secretly AL's lobby carried out vote ragging. But hardly it came out in the press. It was selected rigging in selected places by selected people in some 30/40 seats but still AL failed to get simple majority(151 seats). Soon AL formed the govt with the support of Jatiya Party.

@ Then, the election of 2001 was completely free and fair where BNP got absolute majority and AL got only 86. JP got 35.

@ Finally, the digital election of 2008 by Moin U Ahmed, it was completely farse, manipulated and what not ?
