New research compiled by the London based women’s rights organisation Equality Now reveals that almost one in five women and girls in Saudi Arabia has undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).

“That’s a high rate,” says their MENA consultant Suad Abu-Dayyeh. “We knew FGM is being practiced in Saudi Arabia but not to this extent.”

The practice is associated with early and forced marriage as girls are usually cut between 10 and 13 years of age in preparation for a husband, Abu-Dayyeh told MEMO. “It is seen as increasing a girl’s desirability and preventing her from engaging in sexual activity or becoming pregnant outside of wedlock.”

Though UN statistics put the number of girls and women impacted by FGM worldwide at some 200 million, activists claim the figure is much higher.

Statistics remain unclear because women feel uncomfortable discussing it, practitioners in countries where it is illegal don’t document it and young girls without education may not fully understand what has happened to them, says Abu-Dayyeh.

Still, for the countries that are associated with the practice including Egypt, Yemen and Iraq, there are at least established civil society organisations which campaign to end cutting women. As there is no recognition that it takes place in the kingdom, there are no NGOs or institutions women can turn to for help.

Civil society within Saudi Arabia is almost non-existent and those who speak out about women’s rights are persecuted and imprisoned by the government. This has created a climate of fear which makes campaigning on issues like FGM virtually impossible.

says Abu-Dayyeh.

Recently the kingdom has come under fire for arresting and torturing 11 female human rights activists weeks before a ban on women driving cars was lifted. They have been denied access to lawyers and independent monitors banned from the courtroom.

Under the male guardianship system women in Saudi are legally classified as minors and must seek permission from a male relative to travel, play sports and make choices regarding health care.

“Under such a repressive system, it is incredibly hard for any women or girl to take a stand against a harmful practice like FGM.”

“Although women’s rights are an issue across the Middle East,” says Abu-Dayyeh “the situation in Saudi Arabia is particularly dire with women enduring very extreme oppression that is legally sanctioned by the state.”

Where is the proof and where is so called data came from??? There is no point in opening the threads without the proof. I can say tomorrow Iran have gone to Mars and a western organisation have confirmed it that's not the way things work in real life. Ask this so called organisation to show us the data and how they came to this conclusion. We are all Muslim brothers back stabbing should not be our hallmark. We may not agree at times with many things with each other but that's far things should go and we differ to disagree and end of the topic.

According to the recently released World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap report, Iran is among the five worst countries in the world when it comes to improving women’s rights, parity and equality...

While the majority of countries in the Middle East have shown progress, the Islamic Republic of Iran is heading in a negative direction.

According to the WEF’s report, Iran has gone backwards “on the educational attainment and health and survival gender gaps”. This is happening while other countries in the region have improved. For example, according to the report, Saudi Arabia “re-closes its gender gap in enrolment in primary education” and sees progress “in gender parity for professional and technical workers.”

Bomb Saudia for that, and kill millions.

There is female circumcision in Islam so it's probably that. Not sure what it entails though.

In western countries girls virginity is lost at similar age of around 12 years due to extramarital relationship but no one raise voice of such mutilation to their genitals
This is western standard of basic human rights.

It is a demographic issue, not a religious issue. And male circumcision continues without any choice from the boys. Where is the UN demanding jews to stop oral suction (sex) on a baby private part done by rabbis:

youtube took down most of the videos on this rabbi sucking baby private parts issue due to pressure from the jewish community.

No there isnt. Give me a quote or reference from the texts.

Its an African cutural thing attributed to islam due to islamaphobia.

Most muslims have never even heard about female circumcision... Ive asked many.

I didn't know about it before either but it's definitely a thing.

Africans have their own cultural stuff, that's different.
