All eyes on Sayedee
War trial verdict today

Today, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 finally delivers the verdict in the case against Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War.

Even though it was the first war crimes case to go on trial at the tribunals, it would be the third verdict to be delivered.

The 18-month-long proceedings of the case at Tribunal-1 had to negotiate difficult hurdles, including the “Skype controversy”, reconstitution of Tribunal-1 and rehearing of closing arguments.

Like the day the verdict in Jamaat leader Quader Mollah's case was delivered, Jamaat-e-Islami called for countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal today assuming that "an unjust punishment would be awarded".

Meanwhile, youths of the unprecedented movement, demanding capital punishment to all war criminals, gathered at the Gonojagoron Mancha at Shahbagh yesterday evening to resist Jamaat and student body Islami Chhatra Shibir's possible violence and covert attacks.

Shahbagh protesters said they would continue their demonstration all night until the verdict is delivered.

They said they would celebrate and return home in elation after Sayedee had been awarded the death penalty. They would continue with their agitation if the verdict fell short of their expectations, they added.

Yesterday, Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir said, “The judgement has already been prepared. Let the matter be fixed for tomorrow [today] for the judgement."

A former lawmaker elected with Jamaat ticket, Sayedee, 73, was facing 20 charges of crimes against humanity including looting, killing, arson, rape and forcefully converting people into Muslims during the Liberation War.

Nayeb-e-Ameer (vice-president) Sayedee was indicted on October 4, 2011.

On December 6 last year, the court had said it kept the case awaiting verdict delivery. It decided to rehear the closing arguments following reconstitution of Tribunal-1 on December 13.

On January 29, the three-member Tribunal-1, led by Justice Kabir with members Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Anwarul Haque, put Sayedee's case back on awaiting verdict delivery after conclusion of the closing arguments.

While wrapping up its arguments in the case, the prosecution sought capital punishment for Sayedee claiming that it had proved all but one of the charges brought against him.

Defence counsels claimed that the prosecution had failed to prove any of the charges brought against him.

A total of 28 people, including the investigation officer, testified against Sayedee while the statements of 16 witnesses made before the investigation officer were adopted as evidence by the Tribunal-1.

Seventeen people testified for Sayedee as defence witness.

CHARGES
One of the charges cites Sayedee's involvement in the killing of three Bangalee government officials in the then sub-division of Pirojpur and throwing their bodies in the Baleshwar river.

Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, father of eminent writer Humayun Ahmed and noted educationalist-writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, was among the three. He was a police officer.

The other two were deputy magistrate Saif Mizanur Rahman and sub-divisional officer (in-charge) Abdur Razzak.

During the Liberation War, Sayedee along with other armed Razakars kept Bipod Saha's daughter Vanu Saha confined to their home at Parerhat under Pirojpur Sadar Police Station and regularly raped her there.

Being a member of collaborator force *******, Sayedee exercised his power to convert 100-150 Hindus of Parerhat and other villages into Muslims and forced them to go to mosque to pray.

On May 4, 1971, Sayedee as a member of Peace (Shanti) Committee informed the Pakistan army about a secret gathering of a group of people behind the Madhya Masimpur bus-stand in Pirojpur and took the army to the spot. The army killed 20 people.

On that day, Sayedee along with his accomplices looted valuables of members of the Hindu community living in Masimpur Hindu Para. They also set the houses of Hindus ablaze and opened fire on the people who were fleeing the scene. At least 13 people were killed then.

THE TRIAL
Sayedee was arrested on June 29, 2010 in a case filed in connection with hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.

He was shown arrested in the war crimes case later.

The investigation agency, designated to deal with war crimes probes, handed over its report on Sayedee to the prosecution on May 31, 2011, and the prosecution on July 11, 2011, submitted formal charges against Sayedee.

The Tribunal-1 took the charges into cognisance on July 14, 2011.

He was indicted on October 4, 2011.

On November 20, 2011, the prosecution placed its opening statement and started to produce their witnesses on December 7, 2011.

The defence began producing their witness on September 2, 2012.

Following repeated failure to produce witnesses, the Tribunal-1 closed defence witness testimony recording.

The defence and prosecution completed placing their closing arguments between November 5, 2012, and December 6, 2012.

The Tribunal-1 reheard the closing arguments between January 13, 2013, and January 29, 2012.

Tajul Islam, a defence lawyer of Sayedee's case, told The Daily Star last evening that they were yet to decide whether they would show up for verdict delivery today due to the hartal.

Jamaat warms up with violence
Allies silent over its hartal today; youths call all to defy

Failing to get the support of any party in or outside the BNP-led alliance for today's nationwide hartal, a desperate Jamaat-e-Islami resorted to violence yesterday to strike fear into the hearts of people in different parts of the country.

Jamaat announced the dawn-to-dusk hartal yesterday, minutes after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 announced around 12:30pm that it would deliver today the verdict of the war crimes case against Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

Jamaat-Shibir men torched and vandalised vehicles in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj last night, creating panic among people.

They even attacked a bus carrying the footballers of Muktijoddha Sangsad's under-16 team on Satmasjid road in the capital, leaving five players injured, said police.

Talking to The Daily Star, BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed said his party was yet to decide whether it would back Jamaat's hartal.

BNP would not officially support Jamaat's shutdown like the previous ones this month, considering it could incur people's wrath for backing Jamaat's hartal, said sources in BNP.

At a press conference in the morning, the leaders of Iman O Desh Rokkhar Andolon, an alliance of nine Islamist parties, said they would not back Jamaat if it calls hartal over war crimes related issues.

RAJSHAHI
At least five people, including two journalists and a policeman, were injured as Jamaat-Shibir men clashed with police and locals at Sheroil Colony in Rajshahi yesterday.

The clash erupted at 5:30pm, when around a hundred Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession with sticks and brickbats in support of the hartal and some locals tried to resist them, said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Moniruzzaman.

Among the locals were many Awami League activists, witnesses said.

The Jamaat-Shibir men and the locals chased each other and exchanged brick chips in great numbers, injuring Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain of the Detective Branch of the RMP.

The hartal supporters threw brick chips at journalists, wounding Prothom Alo photojournalist Shahidul Islam and My TV cameraman Mohammad Mustahab and damaging their cameras.

The locals caught two Shibir members -- Tawkir, 20, and Liakat Ali, 20, -- and beat them up in droves. The two were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, said police and witnesses.

Jamaat-Shibir men blasted four cocktails during the clash.

Police intervened around 5:45pm and, firing six tear gas shells and 20 rubber bullets, dispersed the pro-hartal activists.

Three of the activists, including Tawkir and Liakat, have been arrested, said the police.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ
Meanwhile in Chapainawabganj, Jamaat and Shibir members yesterday attacked law enforcers, injuring 14 policemen, including Officer-in-Charge Zamir Uddin of Shibganj Police Station.

Sub-Inspector Nur-e-Alam of the police station said Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession in Shibganj Bazar area and suddenly attacked policemen with brick chips and sticks.

They damaged some vehicles and torched the local Awami League office around 5:15 pm, he added.

Police fired at least 50 rounds of bullet and 25 tear gas canisters to disperse them.

Pro-government men soon showed up and battled with Jamaat-Shibir men, vandalising an ATM booth of Islami Bank at Shibganj Bazar, said witnesses.

Around 5:00pm, Jamaat-Shibir activists marched in procession from Boro Indira intersection, said Golam Mortuza, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Police intercepted them when the procession neared Shaheed Satu Hall, trying to approach the Gonojagoron Mancha.

Supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami which called Thursday’s nationwide daylong shutdown attacked a vehicle of Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra at Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Wednesday, leaving several footballers injured.

“The attack on our bus was made on our way to the club after a match of Under-16 Football Tournament at Motijheel,” Shafiul Islam Manik, coach of the football club, told bdnews24.com.

“The attackers were chanting slogans in support for the shutdown,” the former national footballer added.

The Jamaat called the Thursday strike, which coincides with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1’s scheduled pronouncement of verdict in the case against its leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee over crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

Manik, also former Bangladesh national football team captain, said the attack left the front and rear glasses of the bus broken.

He said the attackers also beat up several players with sticks.

Manik demanded exemplary punishment to the attackers.

Meanwhile, a human hauler was also set on fire by some unknown miscreants in the same area.

Dhanmondi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain said the incident occurred around 7pm.

The police official blamed pro-shutdown activists for torching the vehicle.

‘Ganjagaran’ asks nation to defy strike

Reazul Bashar and Ashik Hossain, bdnews24.com

‘Ganjagaran Mancha’ protesters on Wednesday urged people to dominate the streets on Thursday in defiance of the nationwide shutdown called by Jamaat-e-Islami, called demanding Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s release.

The announcement made from the ‘Ganajagaran’ rally at Motijheel also asked Members of Parliament to bring their cars out during the dawn-to-dusk general strike.

The International Crimes Tribunal -1 is expected to deliver a verdict on Thursday on Jamaat leader Sayedee on charges of crimes during the nation’s nine-month bloody independence struggle in 1971.

‘Ganajagaran Mancha’ also demanded that Jamaat politics be banned for opposing the birth of Bangladesh.

“A Jamaat- Shibir strike was rejected before this. But no more rejection, we must resist them now. Let all of you be prepared.” Bangladesh Chhatra Union General Secretary Hassan Tarek, an organiser of ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’, told the thousands present in the rally.

Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam also proposed defiance. “Those of you who have jobs will go to your offices; Students will go to their educational institutions and businesspersons will continue with their trade.”

“No strike by Jamaat and Shibir will be enforced in this country”

“Prepare for their shutdown tomorrow with bamboo sticks in your hands”, Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree President Bappaditya Basu said.

”Foil attempts by Jamaat-Shibir to stage a shutdown on Thursday by coming down on the streets with your cars. Remember the price of Bangladesh’s national flag and her sovereignty is much more costlier than your vehicle.”

To the MPs, he said, “Ride the streets with you duty-free cars tomorrow (Thursday).”

Other student leaders also addressed the rally with calls to resist the nationwide lockdown.

Earlier, ‘Ganjagaran Mancha’ had given out calls to the people urging them to reject two strikes called by Jamaat and the 12 small parties.

Students and general people dominated the streets with processions in response to that call. Shutdown activists were barely visible during their strike.

”You have already shown Jamaat-Shibir that they have no place in this country by rejecting two of their strikes”, said Imran H Sarkar, spokesperson for the ‘Ganjagaran Mancha’.

“I urge you to resist tomorrow’s strike by Jamaat and Shibir and show them their places.”

Thousands of supporters roared in solidarity with the resistance call from ‘Ganjagaran Mancha’.

”We will spend this night at Prajanma Chattar. We will return home tomorrow with a verdict of death penalty”, the spokesman said.

“Keep all your businesses open. Work like you do everyday”, said Imran in the rally at the city’s commercial hub in Motijheel.

Talking directly to the International Crimes Tribunal, he said, “We do not impose any pressure on you. Please continue working in a neutral manner. Do not fear Jamaat -Shibir’s anarchy and terror.”

He demanded death penalty for Sayedee saying, “Support the call of the nation. Do not be confused. Do not have fear.”

There will be a continuous sit-in at Shahbagh starting from Wednesday night. People from all walks of life have been asked to join a mass procession that will be taken out from Shahbagh at 10am on Thursday amidst the shutdown.

@Loki Thread proliferation is a huge problem in this section. We need to open less threads and discuss issues in existing threads IMO.

There are few prolific thread generators:

- Capt. AL
- madx
- ham-fist (gone for now)

Most of these people I believe are spreading party line propaganda. So in order to counter this propaganda, we need to close their threads and ask them to post in existing Sticky threads or existing normal threads. If it is an important new issue and news item for Bangladesh and it does not fit existing threads, only then it should warrant opening a new thread.

All economy related news can go to Economy news sticky thread. Also, other smaller news item should go into Bangladesh News sticky thread.

Just a suggestion to remove the clutter created by propagandists, that crowds out more important issues for discussion.
