Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said on Monday it is setting up a dedicated research task force to spearhead innovative and potentially revolutionary new paths to growth, with the goal of transforming the e-commerce trading platform into a well-rounded and technology-driven powerhouse.

The group said that through a new and independent research and development department dubbed NASA, the internet juggernaut is setting its sights on developing core technologies that would serve 2 billion people in 20 years.

Founder and Chairman Jack Ma said the R&D initiative accords with a broader plan to turn Alibaba into what he called "the world's fifth largest economy", creating 100 million jobs and enabling 10 million enterprises to become profitable in two decades.

"Just like how the National Aeronautics and Space Administration fueled fundamental progress of science and technology and facilitated people's lives, new economies must be built upon new technology-enabled infrastructure," said Ma, who was speaking at the company's first internal technology conference held in its headquarters in Hangzhou last week.

Ma, whose comments were released in a statement by the company on Monday, added that Alibaba is ready to shoulder the responsibility of major technological breakthroughs.

Areas of focus would include, but not be confined to, machine learning, chips, the internet of things, operating systems and biometric identification, Ma said.

Alibaba's Chief Technology Officer Zhang Jianfeng said: "Today we've reached a tipping point when technology makes a real difference."

The new R&D agency intends to move away from the old business model, under which technology focused on supporting business operations.

Instead, Alibaba said it wanted to establish a pure holistic R&D mechanism that furnished the group with cutting-edge technological solutions that would be in the pipeline for the coming one or two decades.

The company currently employs more than 20,000 engineers, more than 500 of whom have PhDs. Nine of its 36 partners on the management board are experienced engineers.

Alibaba has been pushing hard on the technology front, from using facial recognition technologies in digital payments, adopting artificial intelligence to help mitigate traffic congestion around Hangzhou, to leveraging big data in anti-piracy campaigns.

Among the latest effort is a pilot program rolled out last week by the company's cloud-computing arm Alibaba Cloud in partnership with Intel Corp, under which the two agreed to build a cloud-based acceleration service that enables cloud-service customers to have virtual access to a larger set of computer resources more effectively.

Zhang Mengmeng, a senior researcher at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, said that as Alibaba grows its core businesses into a collaborative ecosystem, it will need technology as the firepower to enhance its complementary capabilities.

"It's a visionary move. Alibaba is no longer content with being recognized as an online trading platform," she said.

"It needs new technologies to fulfill and balance its multiple roles as a virtual shopping mall, a cloud computing provider, a payment tool, and a logistics network."

China's internet triumvirate known as BAT (for Baidu Inc, Alibaba and Tencent Holdings Ltd) are all sparing no efforts in their push for technological breakthroughs. Search engine Baidu is delving into artificial intelligence research, by championing a national lab for deep learning.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China's e-commerce giant Alibaba group on Wednesday announced a plan to set up an e-commerce hub in Malaysia encompassing logistics, cloud-computing and e-financial service to boost trade and e-commerce in the region.

The e-commerce hub will be part of the collaboration between Alibaba and the Malaysian government in the development of a Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) in Malaysia, in line with the Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) promoted by Jack Ma, Alibaba's executive chairman.

In launching the DFTZ with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Ma said the its first overseas e-hub would be aimed at empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as the younger generation.

"This is the first hub specifically designed for small business and young people," he said. "And we are going to use new technology to empower small business and young people."

"There will be a logistics hub, we got one-stop service, we have got big data. As long as you have a good product, you have a good idea, this facility is going to enable you," he said.

For his part, Najib said Alibaba is the "perfect partner" for Malaysia to develop its digital economy.

Among the cooperation announced on Wednesday, Alibaba's logistic platform Cainiao and its e-commerce website Lazada will lead the effort to develop a regional e-commerce and logistics hub near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The initial phase is currently expected to roll out before the end of 2017 by Alibaba, Cainiao, Lazada and Post Malaysia, leading to the planned formal launch by the end of 2019.

Alibaba Cloud, its cloud computing arm, will build a cloud platform in Malaysia to foster the local SMEs, while Ant Financial inked an agreement with Malaysia's leading banks CIMB bank and Maybank to explore collaboration opportunities in e-payment and financing services in Malaysia, with an initial focus on inbound Chinese tourism and promoting trade by Malaysian SMEs.

Daniel Zhang, chief executive of Alibaba Group, said Malaysia is chosen as Alibaba's regional logistics hub for its location as well as the fact that the two sides share the same vision.

"Globalization is Alibaba's long term strategy and today is an important milestone," said Zhang.

Neither Zhang nor Ma gave specific amount of investment that Alibaba plans to make in Malaysia, but Zhang said the group is committed to investing and developing the hub while drawing the long-term plan with the Malaysian side.

Alibaba bets big on Thai prospects

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd expects to complete the construction of an e-commerce and logistics hub in Thailand by 2019, taking the internet behemoth closer to Southeast Asian economies and its goal of shedding its reliance on the Chinese market.

Building of the park is on a "steady course" and marks the company's long-term investment in Thailand, Alibaba said in an emailed statement to China Daily.

Under an agreement with the Thai government in December, Alibaba vowed to help develop the country's e-commerce sector through providing training to small businesses and individuals, and exploring ways to enhance its logistics capabilities.

Alibaba said the hub is designed to provide a one-stop service connecting SMEs, manufacturers, service providers and logistic partners, complementing its existing investment in Lazada Group, a dominant regional e-commerce platform in which Alibaba holds a majority stake.

"We hope the park will empower Thailand's innovative internet startups and boost the country's technology ecosystem," the statement added.

Under the agreement, Alibaba and its subsidiary Lazada will offer e-commerce training to 30,000 Thai SMEs to aid their access to both domestic and international e-commerce platforms and nurture software developers.

The deal also calls for Alibaba to advise the country's postal service-Thailand Post-on shipping and logistics.

The Chinese online giant is marching into a region on the cusp of a digital shopping boom fueled by fast-growing mobile phone usage.

Consultancy eMarketer projects that e-commerce sales, excluding travel, will grow at a rate exceeding 15 percent in Thailand annually over the next four years, reaching $5.69 billion by 2020.

In a similar move, Alibaba in March established the first digital free trade zone dubbed Electronic World Trade Platform in Malaysia, offering small businesses lower barriers for entry and easier access to financing.

"Alibaba's investment here will be different from that in Malaysia, where it is expected to be an e-commerce platform only. In contrast, its investment in Thailand will be broader, covering production platforms ... particularly in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam," Thai Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying.

Alibaba tops Forbes' list of most valuable investment targets in 2016

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has topped a Forbes list of companies with the most investment value in the world last year.

Forbes listed the top ten companies in the world which have the most investment value. Facebook and Uber have occupied the second and third places, respectively, reports ce.cn.

Alibaba's fast growth in cloud computing and e-commerce, as well as its increasing investments in digital entertainment and life services, have made the company welcomed by global investors, revealed Forbes.

As of April 19th, the share price for Alibaba was USD 110.76, with its total market capitalization reaching USD 276.4 billion, reports ce.cn.

To date, the trading price of Alibaba's shares is still 15% higher than that of its initial public offering. Given the company's growth in cloud computing and e-commerce, even a share price of USD 130 could be considered conservative for Alibaba, said financial magazine Barron's.

In 2016, online retail sales in China totaled 5.16 trillion yuan, a 26.2% year-on-year growth. The trading volumes on Alibaba's online shopping platforms reached 120.7 billion yuan on November 11, 2016, now an annual online shopping spree in China.

Apart from Alibaba, another four Chinese companies are also on the Top 10 list, including Didi Chuxing, a one-stop mobile ride-hailing platform; Zhongtong Express; e-commerce company JD.com and electronics company Xiaomi.

Alibaba bringing Belt, Road benefits to SMEs

The marketing and technological power of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group is working with President Xi Jinping's signature global economic vision to bring smaller firms into global commerce on a huge scale.

The budding marriage of one of China's commerce powerhouses and the Belt and Road Initiative is bolstering China's ability to expand global trade for small businesses.

Alibaba is marching into North America by cohosting a trade fair with small merchants from Canada and China in September, Canadian Ambassador to China John McCallum said on Sunday on the sidelines of the 2017 China Green Companies Summit in Henan province.

Jack Ma, Alibaba executive chairman, attending the same meeting, said such moves are part of a broader goal to "expand in line with the Belt and Road Initiative".

"We have plans for Canada, India and Japan, and we have plans for the Belt and Road Initiative," Ma said, without elaborating. Ma said policymakers and business leaders need to come up with new rules and laws to strengthen trade and development.

To build e-commerce infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity, Alibaba has launched a virtual hub with easier entry for smaller firms in Malaysia, and also plans a hub in Thailand. Alibaba payment affiliate Ant Financial plans Alipay-like mobile payment services this year in other economies related to the Belt and Road.

Wang Jian, an economics professor at the University of International Business and Economics, said: "Small and medium-sized enterprises contribute to 95 percent of global economic growth. Through the initiative, the private sector can play its part in revisiting and potentially revising rules of world trade through business practices."

The initiative aims to unlock the potential of SMEs by enhancing connectivity, and e-commerce is a critical channel to reach that goal, said Zhao Lei, a professor at Institute for International Strategic Studies at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China.

The initiative is important for the world, said Paul Kavanagh, Ambassador of Ireland to China. "It is a very open-minded cooperation initiative that welcomes all partners ... . It is very flexible, rather than building strict structures and protocols that constrain cooperation," Kavanagh said.

Alibaba's delivery arm opens smart warehouses for shopping bonanza

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba's delivery arm Cainiao Network on Tuesday unveiled a flagship automated warehouse in Huiyang District in south China's Guangdong Province.

It is among several automated warehouses that Cainiao plans to set up across China for the upcoming "Singles' Day" shopping period.

According to Cainiao, the flagship warehouse has around 200 AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) robots, which can help process more than one million shipments per day. In the past, sorters would pick up goods one by one in warehouses, but now robots can bring goods to the sorters.

The flagship smart warehouse, with more robots and larger storage space, is an updated version of an automated warehouse the company built in Huiyang in July. It will provide efficient logistics services for online shoppers in southern inland cities and Hong Kong.

Cainiao will open a variety of automated warehouses in cities such as Shanghai and Tianjin, and provinces including Guangdong, Zhejiang and Hubei before Singles' Day.

These warehouses will be equipped with automated production lines, AGV robots and robotic arms to improve logistics efficiency, said the company.

November 11 is known in China as Singles' Day because the date, 11-11, resembles four "bare sticks," a term used in China to refer to single people.

The day started to become associated with commerce when Alibaba launched a major promotional campaign for Singles' Day in 2009.

Alibaba's Cainiao to Carry Out Nearly 200 Charter Flights Abroad to Boost Covid-19 Recovery


(Yicai Global) March 23 -- Alibaba Group Holding's logistics arm will launch almost 200 charter flights from this month through April to help global businesses retain their supply chains and get back to work amid the Covid-19 pandemic, 36Kr reported today, citing the delivery firm.

Cainiao Network's international arm Cainiao Global has already flown from its home base Hangzhou to Lithuania's Riga, Russia's Moscow, and Belgium's Liege this month. It has also taken goods from northeastern China's Harbin to Russia's Yekaterinburg. Flights have departed from China's Hong Kong to Liege, Saudi Arabia's Riyadh, and Israel's Tel Aviv.
