Algeria to have giant mosque with world's tallest minaret

.
As I see,many muslim countries still prefer to spend billions on mosques (as if there aren't already enough) instead of spending that amount of money on schools,hospitals etc ? Nice priorities. :disagree:

BTW,This mosque had to be delivered years ago,it still isn't.... and ;

Au départ elle devait coûter 900 millions de dollars et finalement, à force de rallonges, la dernière de 350 millions de dollars, elle reviendra à près de 3 milliards

Initially it was to cost $ 900 million and finally, by extension, the last being of $ 350 million, its cost will nearly amount to $3 billion

yeh man unfortunately we waste money on building huge masjid and not spend money on people!

ps: big lavish masjids are not preferred in Islam they are not haram but a masjid is a place to worship not party!

It's no different to how European countries spend money on large buildings and cultural buildings. For example, the UK spent a tonne of money on Wembley Stadium, new stadiums to host the commonwealth games, new stadiums to host the Olympics, The Millenium Dome (now known as the O2 arena), there are dozens of small examples in my city alone.

The UK has been going through austerity measures, yet spent billions on the Olympic games. We have homeless people on the street yet have big empty stadia gifted to foreign owned football clubs. Wembley was built with taxpayer money and being sold to fund the FA!

In Muslims countries Masjids are one of those cultural things we choose to spend money on.

You are comparing orange and apples. Underdeveloped/emerging countries should spend the amount of money they are spending on mosques to build schools,hospitals,infrastructures to improve public services instead....

This mosque will nearly cost $3 billion,don't you believe people would have prefered that amount to be spent on hospitals,schools etc. ? In the case of Algeria,like many other countries,it's far from having world class infrastructures and facilities...

You missed my point entirely. I was not trying to justify what the Algerians spend and why, I don't care it's their country, their people and their money.

My point was, these grand mosque projects that you see in Muslim countries, are a cultural version of similar projects you see in other countries. I have no idea whether there is a need for it or not, or if Algeria should spend money elsewhere, but rulers like to make it look like they've done something, they build roads, or momuments or other grandiose projects to satisfy their egos, in the Muslim world, building mosques can also be a form of that.
