Alenia Aermarchi has decided not to offer its C-27J Spartan transport aircraft to India, telling IHS Jane's that it is too advanced for the basic requirements of the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme.

"Alenia Aermacchi has always worked for the development of its products aiming at the top of the technology and performances. The C-27J Spartan is the most modern multimission tactical transport aircraft available on the market," a company spokesperson said on 31 October.

"The Indian Air Force [IAF] Avro Replacement programme instead calls mainly for a basic medium transport aircraft and, therefore, Alenia Aermacchi decided to not participate to the tender," he added, concluding: "India remains a very strategic market for Alenia Aermacchi proprietary products, including trainers and maritime patrol aircraft."

What the ?

I hope it won't turn into a single vendor situation ..
Let's wait for other companies decision..

I fail to see anything special in C-27 Spartan.

Larger cargohold aimed on carrying light vehicles too, improved gear for tactical operations at unprepared airstrips for example, basically things that a C130 or MTA would be meant to do as well, just packed in a smaller twin tubroprop aircraft. However the fact that it can reach into roles of proper medium class tactical aircrafts is also it's downside, since it's not as capable as them, but comes at similar operational costs. The Avro replacement however doesn't have such high requirements, since it's about basic logistical support and that's where more cost-effective aircrafts are preferable. Stating that the C27J is too advanced, only means that it's too costly for the aims of the competition and that it therefor doesn't get them much to team up with an Indian industry partner. But as I expected just a few days ago, that will create big trouble for India again, since we now in a single vendor situation again.

Il-214 is aimed as a direct replacement for the An-32, though there is hardly any comparison. Avro replacement is for light logistical support

Now the competition will be announced again as it is a single vendor situation.

Fresh tender likely after Tata-Airbus single bidder | idrw.org

Interesting to note that SAAB was not allowed to enter competition as they wanted to produce all their aircrafts in India but India wanted them to produce 16 in their own facility. Producing all in India would have been better for Indian partner imo.

I had hoped this wouldn't happen but was never 100% convinced the C-27J would actually contest in this Avro replacement program because Alenia didn't seem to be making any noises that they were remotely interested in doing so whilst Airbus Military had shown quite a bit of interest.

As undesirable as a single vendor situation is I hope this one is processed and allowed to win as otherwise the deal will just go round and round and end up on the trash pile and the IAF will still be no closer to the replacement of their Avros which is urgently needed.
