One evening a little over a fortnight ago, a mysterious illuminated object appeared without warning in the dark sky above the world's largest oil refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It circled over the complex before disappearing just as suddenly as it had appeared.

Three days later, the object returned, this time a little after dawn. This time, the process cameras at the Reliance Industries Ltd refinery managed to take a few pictures of the object. It was bright and spherical.

RIL has reported the sightings to the government, along with the pictures. The Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard have been put on alert, and the defence ministry is beefing up security for the refinery, sources said.

The incidents are being kept a tightly guarded secret. There is no firm assumption yet on what the object might have been. The refinery is located on the Gulf of Kutch, close to the Pakistan border, and has long been seen as a potential target for a terror attack from both air and sea.

In April 2012, the Intelligence Bureau had issued an alert saying that oil refineries on the west coast were under threat from the Lashkar-e-Toiba. The alert specifically mentioned targets including the RIL refinery complex.

On January 30, RIL executive director P M S Prasad wrote to Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily, describing the sightings.

"On 24 January 2013 around 8.30 pm, one unidentified bright object, perceived to be of the size of a volleyball, was seen hovering over the refinery. It was seen to circle four times before disappearing," Prasad wrote.

"It could have been treated as a one-off occurrence, however the morning of 27 January again witnessed the same phenomenon between 6.30 and 7.00 am. Process cameras installed in the refinery caught some images."

Prasad pointed out that "local forces and capabilities are ill-equipped to deal with high-technology air-borne assaults, should anyone try and attempt them", and asked Moily to take up the matter with the defence and home ministries in order to "upgrade and maintain vigil on the complex" and to "investigate the incident on top priority" so as to "thwart any possible misadventure in the future".

The Jamnagar refinery's two units have the capacity to process 62 million tonnes of crude annually, which is 27 per cent of India's total refining capacity. An incident at the refinery complex would significantly affect production of oil and cooking gas.

Despite the danger, the refinery continues to be protected only by a 250-member commando unit of the Central Industrial Security Force which provides perimeter security on the side of both the sea and the city.

You mount a camera on this and you can spy and do Arial reconnaissance for terrorist attack.

Load it with RDX and its a convenient tool for terrorist attack.

I do recall a news earlier which said spherical flying objects were observed at the china border doing a possible reconnaissance.

Lights whizzing by Jamnagar refinery leave UFO rumours in their wake
Is it an extra-terrestrial ship, a spy drone of Pakistan, a space vehicle, or one of those Chinese hot air balloons launched by locals? Rumours are swirling after reports came of an unidentified flying object (UFO) hovering over the world’s largest oil refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat, owned by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL). The authorities are groping in the dark over the spottings.

Jamnagar is one of the refineries facing terror threat from Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, according to reports by the Intelligence Bureau came out last year.

According to the local police, an object in the shape of a red bowl was found circling the RIL unit at around 8pm on January 24. Though it was neglected as a one-of-its-kind incident, the object resurfaced after three days in the morning. Though some officials confirmed the development, RIL did not comment on the incident.

“Immediately after a complaint was lodged by the refinery at Meghpar police station, army and air force officials visited the spot along with us. There are various theories going the rounds, but we are on high alert. There were even reports of finding some unidentified particles and batteries near a cement factory, 150-km away from here,” said a senior police official.

Investigators have already sent the footage and photographs of the mysterious illuminated object to forensic science laboratory (FSL) at Gandhinagar. Security has been beefed up with a 250-member commando unit of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

“Investigations are on. We are coordinating with all security agencies including Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard,” said Sara Rizvi, Jamnagar superintendent of police. According to reports, in a letter to petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily, RIL executive director P M S Prasad asked for a detailed investigation into the incident.

However, talking about the object sightings, Jamnagar collector Nalin Upadhyay said: “It is very difficult to ascertain what the object is because no flying object was detected in the radars of Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard. It was seen only over the refinery and by few residents near the refinery. However, investigations are on.”

Among the many theories going the rounds also include experimental objects sent out by security agencies or meteorological department for measuring atmospheric data, as well as Chinese hot air balloons. Investigators added that some villagers and RIL employees had seen mysterious light but the airport authorities are also clueless about any such incidents.

However, one of the major concerns is that the images sent to forensic centre are not clear enough to identify the object. “A clearer picture would emerge once these agencies submit the report. Till then, it would not be possible to reach a conclusion,” an official said. The refinery is strategically important, too, as it is close to the Pakistan border.

Wtf is happening around Indian border. Most probably its high altitude hot air balloons left for recon purposes.

there was news that the refinery was guarded with Akash -I missile's.
Yeah but all radars including military as well as civilians were unable to detect it. If it was balloon(hot) for reconnaissance purpose then navy might come in handy with ships able to detect anomalies on sea surface floor.
