PESHAWAR: Nato helicopters violated Pakistani airspace near the Torkham border, officials told The Express Tribune on Wednesday.

The gunship helicopters reportedly entered Pakistani territory and hovered for around 10 minutes before turning back.

This is not the first time foreign aircraft have violated Pakistani airspace.

On November 26, 2011, an early Saturday morning attack by Nato helicopters killed at least 24 security personnel and injured 12 soldiers on a Pakistani check post in Salala, which is located in the Tehsil Bayzai area of Mohmand Agency on the Pak-Afghan border.

The incident took place in a village of Salala, which is an area bordering the Kunar province of Afghanistan.

Last year, Indian spy planes allegedly violated Pakistani airspace in the Nakyal sector in Kotli, Azad Kashmir.

The Indian planes continued to fly inside Pakistani air space for several minutes until planes from Pakistan took to the air, leading to a retreat of the Indian planes.

Similarly, in June 2013, two Indian fighter planes entered Pakistan’s airspace near the Head Sulemanki border.

The most significant airspace violation occurred in 2011, when American Navy Seals entered Abottabad in two helicopters to capture and kill Osama Bin Laden.
