(Reuters) - European plane manufacturer Airbus' Defence and Space unit and Tata Advanced Systems have submitted a joint bid to replace the Indian Air Force's fleet of 56 Avro aircraft with Airbus' C295 transport planes, Airbus said in a statement on Tuesday.

Under the bid, Airbus Defence and Space would supply the first 16 planes while the subsequent 40 would be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems in India.

Finally Tata moves forward, now we need a counter offer.

Now it is upto IAF...not to doom our hopes!!

any natural suspects?

For a long time we susspected the C295 vs C27J battle, but most recent reports suggest that the Italian aircraft is not in the run. Not sure if that has anything to do with the VIP helicopter scam, but the reports suggest that only Antonov is interested to compete and their chances in the current crisis are more than low. More interesting is, that earlier reports suggested that Antonov wanted to team up with TATA, but if TATA now has finally teamed up with Airbus, it will further increase the chances of Airbus.
The problem I see however is, that if Antonov or no other vender follows with a team up and bid, we will have a single vendor situation, which will is against our competition policies. So the whole deal can be further delayed!

Yeah...
Thats what I hate about these single vendor situations. Delays delays & delays even if it compromises our national security no onevseems to care. On the other hand, Armed forces suffers heavily. Maybe it is time GOI modifies a few policy rules to let single vendor to supply in various importent deals.

To avoid the single vendor situation is actually good for us, because we are in the weaker position to negotiate on price or ToT if the vendor knows he is the only option. But at a certain level, one simply have to take a decision or modify the deals to get more vendors in.

@sancho
Well that being said, 197 LUH saga coupled with few other deals are examples of lack of flexibility on MODs part. Such situations should & must be avoided in future.
All good as long as Our forces gets whats they want

Wouldn't it be better to proceed with the C27J to ensure commonality with the 130s?

Let's wait and see whom c27 j will join

May be VIP chopper scam is one of the reason

The commonality point would make sense if we would have a larger fleet of C130s, but we will have only 11 or 12, since MTA is meant for the bulk of operations in the medium class. Moreover, the advantages of the C27J are similar to those of the C130, which both are aimed at tactical operations, but the Avro replacement is not about that. It's for basic logistical support, be it cargo or troop transport and here the cost-effectivity of operations will play a bigger role than capabilities IAF covers with MTA and C130Js.
