Airbus to build military choppers in India with Mahindra

Really I thought with its modular design it was far better choice than the European option
And why would you say that?
Being twin engined and Russian is going to make the Ka-226s FAR more challenging to maintain and operate than their European counterparts. In both previous LUH/RSH deals the Fennec has been found to be the best product/deal for the IAF/IA. It was only after Putin visited India and proposed the new JV in India that the Ka-226 was picked. There was nothing technical about it.

This is very good news, push to get defense manufacturing in India will help us big time in long term. Lower cost, Local Jobs and Knowledge Transfer.

Putin might have offered something which Europeans didn't like some TOT on engine or something else or maybe assistance to speed up the indeginious LUH program

I like how you scheme your way around pseudo-subtly denigrating Europeans, our products and services. Ka 226 afaik is powered by Turbomeca engine. Yes, European.

To everyone else: What kind of helicopters are meant to be manufactured there?

It's true that the govt-govt agreement is likely to include some "sweeteners" what they are is a mystery to everyone outside of the Govt.

But as pointed out there is no way TOT of the engines was part of that agreement as the Ka-226 is powered by Turbomeca engines which is a French entity and already has excellent ties with India/HAL and extensive corporation already goes on.

As for assistance on HAL's LUH, I would say it was unnecessary.

I am sorry if you felt that,I have very positive view about the Europeans & their product what I am meant was that Putin might have offered some technology which the Europeans weren't offering.
Again I apologise if I offended you

Then perhaps agreement on someotger technology

There is no doubt this was a political move and thus there must be some benefits for India, what they are will only become apparent in the long term.

@Abingdonboy - I don't think the Sergei's are actually meant for IAF/AAC? From what I know we'll just be producing
them for the commercial market while the military only gets HAL's LUH.

Of interest to Pakistanis:

Mahindra & Mahindra started out as Mahindra & Mohammed as a partnership between the Mahindra brothers &
Malik Ghulam Muhammad. After partition. Ghulam Muhammed left to Pakistan & the name was changed to Mahindra & Mahindra. Ghulam Muhammed went to become Pakistan's 1st finance Minister & then the 3rd Governor General.

A very good partnership Mahindra bagged here, congrats to them. Hopefully we will see Mahindra produced airbus designs for the Indian military.

This is what PSK is saying, correct? He is the only commentator who has claimed these Ka-226s are not for the ongoing 197 RSH/LUH requirement but for the BRO (absurd IMHO) and other civilian units.

There seems to be nothing to back up such claims and given the figure of Ka-226s ordered/agreed is the IDENTICAL number of foreign RSH/LUH desired I find it more logical to assume the Ka-226s are part of a govt-govt deal with Russia to get this RSH requirement filled (after the NDA stupidly cancelled the tender last year) ASAP.

Aside from the LUHs (given this seems to have been filled by the Ka-226 for the IA/IAF) this consortium is in a good position to secure some massive upcoming orders- N-LUH, CSAR helos for the IAF, N-MRH (in the 12 ton class with the EC-725) etc

There is also a HUGE civilian market in India for helos that is going to grow year on year and not just for private individuals but states (police forces, state governments, HEMS etc) and other central agencies (CAPFs, ONGC and Pawan Hans for example) also are going to have massive demand for helos in the medium to long term.

+ I wonder if Airbus will use Mahindra as their lead agency in India for supporting all their products, at least on the Airbus Military side given that the Indian Mil is going to be a very large operator of Airbus Military equipment. Mahindra may also get charged with all such MRO activities for not just India's military (Airbus origin) equipment but for other militarises in the region also.

...while Mahindra went on to be a $17 billion-dollar multinational company...good for us.8-)
