Airbus Military Targets India as It Revives Delayed Export Drive

By Robert Wall - Sep 12, 2012

Airbus Military is preparing to push A400M troop-transporter sales to India and other countries as the aircraft maker ramps up the pursuit of overseas customers to turn a profit on Europe’s largest defense program.

Airbus is putting more efforts into exports after delays in completing the development program held back those activities for several months, Domingo Urena-Raso, the head of Airbus Military, said in an interview in Berlin yesterday.

Deliveries of the A400M to the main customers are set to begin in the second quarter. An engine-related development glitch forced a schedule revision this month beyond the end-of- March contractual deadline. Delays on the 20 billion-euro ($25 billion) A400M have led to Airbus Military parent European Aerospace, Defence & Space Co., to concede it will lose money on the program unless exports are secured.

“India is one of the key customers for this plane,” Urena-Raso said at the Berlin air show. “Once certified, it is our intention to bring this aircraft as soon as we can to India.”

Persian Gulf countries were also supposed to get a taste of the A400M this year, though the additional work on the engines postponed that push, the Airbus Military head said.

Airbus Military is in talks with France about the financial implications of the latest delays, EADS Chief Executive Officer Tom Enders said in Berlin. Those discussions are going on even this week. Urena-Raso said it is not clear if there will be any penalties, though if there were any, they would probably be minor given the short delay.

He would not discuss how liabilities would be handled between EADS and Europrop International, the engine joint venture of Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc (RR/), MTU Aero Engines (MTX), Rolls- Royce and Safran SA (SAF)’s Snecma division. The gearbox, the cause of the latest delays, is made by Avio in Italy.

Airbus still plans to deliver four A400Ms to France and Turkey next year.

India does not need this plane imho. More C-130s can be inducted if MRTA does not enters production as planned..

India is planning to get the refueller version of A-400M, not the cargo/transport version. The C-130Js are for cargo and troop transport.

Why would India buy it after C-130 ???

Similar tactical roles, but different classes!

C130J/MRTA - 20t
A400M - 37t

The tanker version needs time till it will be available and India so far is just evaluating the A330 MRTT. The A400 tanker will be interesting for refuelling slower aircrafts like helicopters, the only other option for this would be the KC 130J and although I prefer the A400 tanker, at the current stage I expect C130J tankers.

Why would India buy it after C-130 ???

Because a C130J is a tactical aircraft with medium capacity and limitations especially with vehicles and long range transport. That, why IAF also buys C17, the A400 fits directly between them as a multi role beast! It can do anything the C130J can, but better + fits in the strategic role of carrying an self propelled howitzer, 2 x combat helicopters...at long distances, while beeing more cost-effective than an IL 76 or C17.

Yeah! This first pic will be like INDIAN one.
I am sure that IAF has given or will order another 12 C-130Js and I am sure for A-400M as they will be in IAF till 2020 may be 8-14???
C-130J will play an important role if IAF will attack China.

Defenitely and it would have been worth it, if IAF at least requested some infos and evaluated this class of aircrafts (Antonov 70, Kawasaki XC-2), before simply buying C17s. The key for such aircrafts in India will be the follow order of C17s and MRTA, if we go for them, no A400M class aircraft has a chance anymore.
