Air India passengers paid inflated fares to return from Egypt?

Some passengers who returned from Egypt on the special Air India flight claimed they were made to pay fares more than the normal rates.

'When I went there, I booked return tickets for me and my wife for Rs. 56,000. And now we are being told on no basis that we have to pay Rs. 45,000 per head, else we can't fly on this plane. There was no formal documentation or invoice. They had put up a board which stated that we had to pay $980. The Japanese and Turkish governments had flown out their citizens free of cost. We couldn't even see the US and UK citizens after ten hours, they had been completely evacuated. There was so much chaos. We did not have any other option. It was literally like being blackmailed, we were told that we would have to pay, else they could not do anything," said Vineet Ahuja, a businessman.

However, reacting to such claims, Air India sources said the airline has to charge commercial rates as the special flight cost was not borne by the government.

They added that since the airline has no scheduled operations to Cairo or Egypt, it has no listed fares and that it had to pull out planes from regular operations as it was requested by the Foreign Ministry.

According to travel agents, most airlines flying to Egypt - like Emirates or Qatar - have a system fare or a published fare between Rs. 45,000 and Rs. 47,000.

Egypt crisis: Second special flight brings back 128 more Indians to Mumbai

Yes.... Air India charged 1000$ for every stranded passenger when 400$ is the original cost....

My only question is coundnt the govt have Done it for free ???

It will have to charge that amount first the flight that had to be canceld for them then re route it add tgem up and the amt is much more and bhsi waise bhi air indis loss mein hai

not good.
its the moral responsibility of any democratic government to ensure safety of its citizens anywhere.
these Indians should have been evacuated by the Indian govt. itself without any charges.

Sir that expense was to be taken from aviation ministry and they already are in losses

Come on, They could have asked the cabinet, and when its on a Mission, it certainly is not the responsibility of Aviation ministry, they are generating revenues not helping the stranded

Fot that reason they could have asked them but wont it take time to get a aproval out of it????

They could have compensated there Loss after the Cabinet approval which if takes time, and for such matters cabinet cannot be against for sure, so there loss would be well compensated

Here is where other nations are different from India, since we have larger expat community who are working overseas, nobody cares about them.

Free !!!
there are more than 30000 indians living in cairo alone, including the embassy personnels.can govt freely transport such a huge number of people??

in a war situation it's a different thing...

Arey 10-20 saal main gulf war-1,egypt etc jaisa mauqa milta hai jo air india paise bana sake to banane do unko.problem kya kya hai?Waise bhi sab koi har kisi ko choona laga ke hi to paisa banata hai india main.voters Rs.100 leke vote bechate hain,MP govt scam karke paisa banati hai.military wale scam karke paisa banate hain.to air india banaye to logon ko problem kyon hoti hai.

I think its fair, its not a war situation in Egypt and the amount of Indians living there does not justify a free ticket. Its only social unrest and in such situations its your choice whether to leave Egypt or not. India is providing them with priority flights but anything more is not required. Unlike what India did in Lebanon, similar action is not required here.
