This was a huge news at the time and heavily debated back in January, I said lets wait and see what the board of inquiry has to say and now they've had their say:

New Delhi:*In January, when Naxals opened fire at an Indian Air Force helicopter that was landing in Chhattisgarh, one of the headlines of the encounter was that the captain, crew and two commandos abandoned the helicopter.

They fled to safety in a paramilitary camp nearby, leaving behind a light machine gun, other weapons and an injured radio operator who had been helping navigate the landing in the thick forest area.

An inquiry by the Air Force has said that the captain and others on the helicopter did not run away out of cowardice. Military ethics and protocol warn against abandoning an injured comrade or weapons, but the inquiry has endorsed the decision of Wing Commander TS Singh. "The decision to seek help rather than leave behind a section to protect the injured man and machine was found to be correct," a senior Air Force official told NDTV.

"The explanation given by captain to abandon an injured man and machine and seek help has been accepted as plausible," he added.

The MI-17 helicopter was on a rescue mission to evacuate a wounded solider from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) when it was showered with bullets. The captain and crew's reaction had provoked a sharp response from the union home ministry

Sources also tell NDTV that the Air Force's enquiry has thrown up new recommendations for the Standard Operating Procedure for anti-Maoist operations. Suggestions include increasing the number of elite Garud commandos for each mission, carrying more medical supplies to deal with any injured personnel, and bullet-proof jackets for the crew and commandos.

I wonder if this will satisfy the sensationalist and ignorant media and some of the more stupid members here.

I wonder What that explanation from the Captain is?

The new SOPs are gonna do jack as long as the CAPFs dont clear a perimeter of a few kms around the helipad.Helicopters would keep getting shot at and people will keep getting killed.

No offences but theres nothing to be proud of either....The Indian Armed forces have always awarded people for exceptional bravery..nothing of which is present in this incident of which you are trying to brag about.

It just means that they followed procedures and were not cowards...Dont you expect the IAF to be a professional force mate?

Of course this wasn't a case of exceptional bravery that's not what I'm trying to say. However it's not a case of cowardice on the part of these IAF personnel as was alleged by many fools earlier this year. I think one has to take a very objective and sensible look at the entire thing and perhaps that mean a cold and professional look. By going to seek help through Naxal infested territory the IAF personal actually saved the injured cop, their machine and themselves. Sure they could have risked injuring him further and carried him, sure they could have stayed behind enemy lines and 2 commandos and 2-3 pilots/aircrew make a valiant last stand but what actually happened was everyone came out alive as well as the IAF's helo in the end of it.

Job well done no?

The fools were not accusing them of cowardice but being selfish by not thinking about the injured guy,2 SF operators leaving a machine gun behind :what: etc which drew criticism from MHA and CAPF..Of course it is a job well done according to the Air Force but not according to MHA and CAPF.

So kindly excuse the MHA officials,CAPF and the fools of not being blinded by their support to the defence forces.

before criticising them, someone pls explain what would they have to do in this kind of situation?
what they have is:
* 1 damaged hele
*1 pilot, 1 co-pilot, 1 flight crew(uninjured)
*2 crpf (injured)
*2 garud commandos(without any bullet proof jackets)
*1 MMG
*2 LMG

2 Pilots and 1 flight crew along with 2 Garuds makes 5 fit people...we have 2 LMGs and 1 MMG(according to you)...Even if they decided to go for help they should have carried all weapons with them or made them unusable...LMG would have only helped their cause had they been ambushed by Maoists...

But hey,you know what i am an internet warrior and not blinded by my patriortism...so i am a little critical just like MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS and CRPF is...

hey bro I also think that its better to save life using your brain then to try show bravado and die.

if everyone stayed there and outside help didn't come, they could all have been killed, though like heroes.

You should also use your brain and read my post again...i asked them to not let their machine guns get in the hand of maoists and carry them which would also help them counter any ambush they might have got into.

Difficult to understand? :what:

you are right. the air force caption says they make the LMG MMG unusable, but crpf says the are sill usable when they recovered that weapons. the pilot, copilot and the crew are not combatant like garuds. i would only say the fault was with MoD who only allow 2 garuds in a rescue helicopter. and the garuds doesn't have any BPJ. garuds also have to protect the crew with them.

hmm got it. :D

but the garuds would know that a m/c gun would be handy if Maoists attack them. if they still decided to leave them back then it must have some reason.

Ya bro, thats my point..What could be the reason? That 2 SF operator would leave the machine gun back when their total strength was 5 and LMGs could be handy if they were gonna have a really bad day...

Hindi mein agar bolein toh aiyse situations mein Government agencies humesha apna pallu jhad deti hein...thatswhy i am with the CRPF and MHA that they could have done more..
