ISLAMABAD - Sichuan University, one of Chinese top-ranking educational institutions and Allama Iqbal Open University signed an agreement to promote bilateral cooperation in the field of higher education.
The agreement was formally signed at the Chinese city of Chengdu, the Universitys headquarters and the Vice Chancellor of AIOU Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi and the Universitys vice President Prof. Yan Shijing.
Accordig to a message received here Wednesday, the academic exchange agreement between the two universities is first-ever arrangment for sharing mutual knowledge and experience in the field of higher education.
It was also for first time that China entered into mutual collaboration with any foreign country for promoting education through distance-learning syestm.
Based on equality and mutual benefit, after friendly consultations, the Sichuan University of Peoples Republic of China and the AIOU have agreed upon on a number of steps to promote academic exchanges between each other.
The contents of agreement include exchanges of teachers and researchers in teaching and scientific research and student exchanges including undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students.
Under the agreement, there will also be scientific research cooperation in commonly interested fields and establishment of scientific research cooperation platforms, exchange of journals and academic works and other programs regarded appropriate for exchange by both sides.
In order to implement this agreement, the administrative departments for international cooperation and exchange of the two universities will be responsible for routine contacts and the two universities will work out implementation details for specific exchange programs and supervise the implementation of the agreement and exchange programs based on full consultation with each other
It was decided that if necessary, the two sides could make modifications and supplementations to the present agreement through mutual consultations.
Issues not specified in this agreement shall be solved through friendly consultations between the two sides.
This agreement will be valid for the period of five years from the date of signing by the representatives of both sides and can be extended or terminated by informing the other side in written notice six months prior to the date of expiration.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Sangi appointed Prof. Dr. Rashid A, Naeem, Dean faculty of social sciences to coordinate with partner university for the implementation of the agreement.
The Sichuan University is one of the national universities directly under the Ministry of Education (MOE). It is the most comprehensive and largest university in Western China.
The vice president of the university Professor Yan Shijing and the Vice Chancellor AIOU termed the agreement as a landmark arrangement between the two universities to being the two countries more closer in the educational field.
During the talks on the occasion, it was agreed that the Sichuan University will soon send its faculty member to AIOU for teaching Chinese language.
Besides, the university will also provide three scholarships to AIOU to train its faculty members in the fields of energy and mining.
