AIIMS to be readied for nuclear emergency
20 May 2009, 2346 hrs IST, TNN

NEW DELHI: AIIMS Trauma Centre and Army Hospital will be developed as main centres for emergency medical response to any chemical, biological,
radioactive or nuclear (CBRN) casualties during the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010.
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), National Disaster Management Association (NDMA) along with AIIMS will be training doctors in how to deal with CBRN casualties. The training of second batch started at AIIMS Trauma Centre on Wednesday.

"In the given threat scenario, it is important to be prepared for nuclear emergency. Since it is the doctors who will treat the patients exposed to harmful radiations or bio-chemical threats, it is important to train them. Exposure to harmful radiation could be due to an attack or accident. The biological casualties can happen in a well-monitored laboratory while developing a vaccine,'' said Dr W Selvamurthy, chief controller (R&D), DRDO.

Calling nuclear disaster a remote possibility, member of NDMA B Bhattacharjee said, "It can be ruled out. We have to create adequate awareness about such disaster and the action which needs to be taken. There has to be a plan to detect the level of exposure suffered by the patient before he or she is brought to the hospital. This will help doctors identify patients who need urgent care.''

AIIMS Trauma Centre will be the model project for CBRN casualty management and similar centres will be developed in other hospitals across the country. "At present, the knowledge of handling such emergencies is very limited among the medical fraternity. During the Commonwealth Games, our centre will play a crucial role in trauma care and also CBRN casualties in case of an eventuality,'' said Dr M C Misra, chief, AIIMS Truama Centre.

Experts also stressed on the need to create awareness among masses about such casualties and measures.
