HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Agni-V has a range of over 5,000km and can carry about a 1,000-kg warhead
  2. Also in the works is Agni-VI, which will be armed with 'manoeuvring warheads'
  3. It will be capable of of carrying several N-warheads, each programmed to hit different targets

NEW DELHI: India's most formidable missile, the over 5,000-km range Agni-V, is now ready for user trials by the military after it underwent its fourth and final test-firing from the integrated test range off the Odisha coast on Monday.

The intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Agni-V, dubbed a "game-changer" in strategic deterrence because it brings the whole of China and much more within its strike envelope, was fired from its canister on a launcher truck just after 11am.

Powered by three-stage rocket motors, the 50-tonne missile tore into space to a height of 500 km before following its predetermined flight-path to the "splash point" in southern Indian Ocean 20 minutes later. President Pranab Mukherjee and PM Modi congratulated DRDO.

The Agni-V test, monitored by radars and tracking systems, met all the mission objectives. The country has achieved a very high-level of self-reliance in missile technologies," said the defence minister's scientific adviser G Satheesh Reddy. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar, among others, congratulated DRDO scientists for the "successful" test-firing of Agni-V, which is designed to carry a 1.5-tonne nucleartipped warhead.

TOI was the first to report in its December 14 edition+ the impending test of Agni-V, which will now undergo at least two user-trials by the tri-service Strategic Forces Command (SFC) before full-scale production and induction.

It will take another couple of years for Agni-V to be inducted into SFC, which manages the country's nuclear arsenal, in adequate numbers. But India has now virtually gate-crashed into the exclusive club of the US, Russia, China, France and UK, which have ICBMs.

Congratulations DRDO for successfully test firing Agni V. It will enhance our strategic and deterrence capabilities. #PresidentMukherjee

The missile's canisterlaunch final operational version is significant because it gives the armed forces the requisite operational flexibility to swiftly transport and launch the missile from wherever they want within a matter of minutes. The hermetically-sealed canister gives the missile higher reliability, enhanced mobility, less maintenance and longer shelf-life.
Successful test firing of Agni V makes every Indian very proud. It will add tremendous strength to our strategic defence.

Some more fireworks are likely again over the Bay of Bengal when SFC conducts user-trials of the 4,000-km Agni-IV, which is also designed with China in mind, in the first week of January. Apart from the shorterrange Prithvi and Dhanush missiles, SFC has inducted the Agni-I (700km), Agni-II (2,000km) and Agni-III (3,000km) missiles till now.

Also in the works is Agni-VI, which will be armed with "manoeuvring warheads or intelligent re-entry vehicles" to defeat enemy defence systems or MIRVs (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles). An MIRV payload basically means a single missile is capable of carrying several nuclear warheads, each programmed to hit different targets.

Nice try India but this won't cover up your Nirbhay failures.

No one is covering up our failure's . Infact it was official announcements was made about the failures. It is transparent here.
Also, when you develope something there will be lot of Research and Failures. Without that you cannot get complete products.

India is certainly not like your country as you never do Research, never had failures and atlast you'll have complete product suddenly. This won't seems weird for you ?? Rest of the world knows the fact.

Burning so much!!! Nirbhay failed but this is more crucial than Nirbhay. Its an ICBM thats also modern. So enjoy, you cant even think of getting one.

You are seriously delusional if you think a conventional ballistic missile is in any way superior to a terrain hugging cruise missile that cannot be detected by radar while both being nuclear tipped.

By the way we don't really have the need to make an ICBM since our enemy you is right next to the border, our conventional missiles have more than enough range to hit any part of India with ease, if we felt the need we would surely had developed the missile way before your tests.

Unlike your missiles, our missiles do fail during developmental phase !

Yeah they fail more than they ever succeed, just like your Tajes.

Child do you know name brahmos now go and sleep

So india already has capability for subsonic & supersonic Cruise Mmissile and BM before pakistan we have operational Kh-55 and klub series missiles since decade's in our inventory

Actually you guys hide your missile failure from even your Generals:
the scientist said that during the Kargil crisis of May-July 1999, Musharraf, who was then army chief, “wanted to deploy Ghauri missiles, but air went out of his balloon when the top general in charge of the missile program told him the missile had a faulty guidance system.”

Over a year earlier, on April 6, 1998, Pakistan had carried out what it described as a successful first test of the intermediate-range ballistic missile, developed by Khan Research Laboratory with North Korean assistance.

Even Musharraf, who witnessed that Ghauri launch as a local corps commander, had been led to believe it was a success then, according to the nuclear scientist, who until recently had long been closely associated with the country’s nuclear and missile programs.

The truth, he said, is that the ballistic missile failed to reach its predesignated impact point in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Baluchistan and its debris could not be found — something that would have undermined the missile’s deterrent effect if it were made public.

By that logic is your Su-30 MKI Indian made too?, it's range is only 250km, while our Babur is over 700km in range and is nuclear capable, RA'AD ALCM has range over 350 km and is also nuclear capable and soon we will have a naval version of Babur as well if not already.

You can never hide failures and if we did fail then how can you explain our successfully tested missiles available in operational status within our inventory?

BrahMos now has a range of 600 km, also Indian variant of Kh-59 kazoo has a range of 300+ km.

Also there is no proof other than ISPR claims that all those tests were actually successful.
Your ISPR also lied about the successful test of Ghauri few years back and covered up its failures.

So ISPR claims cannot be trusted.
