DRDO has started working on New Generation of Short range Nuclear Capable Surface to Surface (SSM) ballistic missile called the Agni-1P to replace 80’s developed 150 km Liquid fuelled Prithvi SSM used by Indian Army.
Agni-1P which is currently under development is largely Pakistan centric due to its limited range and as per media reports will have a range of 300 km to 700 km, which is way below than current range of Agni-1 which has a minimum range of 700kms.
Idrw.org has been informed that new Agni-1P will be shorter than current Prithiv-1 and also a lot thinner in diameter, which makes it highly compact and portable in size. idrw.org also has learned that Agni-1P like its big brother Agni-V will come with Composite Canisters so it makes them highly mobile along with better operational flexibility.
Agni-1P will be of two-stage and will be a solid propellant missile. Both stages of the missiles will comprise of composite rocket motors, guidance systems with electromechanical actuators, and inertial navigation systems based on advanced ring-laser gyroscopes.
