As you can see: the countryside in the eastern region is really getting the developed level (or has surpassed some so-called developed countries); while other regions still have some distance to go, but it is laughable for someone to call them "cheap labor" or even "slave labor"... In my father's ancestral village now, it looks just like a developed town.
They also have free housing, and stable jobs in the village-owned enterprises.
And an intercity HSR station is being prepared.

China's rural areas are fairly well taken care of, clean, neat with lots of economic activity going on.

In some cases, what is called a village would easily pass as a town or even a small city in many other developing countries.

As a developing country itself, China has done fairly decent job to developed a nice national landscape, both urban and rural. There are lots to do, but, there is definitely a massive progress going on.
