What's new

After MMRCA, India opens bids for $2 billion attack-hellicopter deal.

I would love to see India have a Chinook. Its one mighty chopper.
For an attack Heli, I would like the Longbow(British) version of Apache

There is no widening of the gap. These deals have to materialize and even if they do, things on the other side do not remain static. Our plans are in line with the deterrence that we feel is appropriate and our purchases will ensure that we keep the same level regardless of whatever India purchases.

THere is a widening gap, your government admitted immediately after India raised its defence budget by 34%. India has sky rocketted its modernisation programme. And has undertaken has decided to spend $32 billion dollars in the next 3 years on modernisation of its
3 million strong Army(Active+ Reserve), in addition to $32.25 billion yearly defence budget. Add to that, spending $4 billion on Navy modernisation, $6 in MMRCA+Heli deals along with another $1 billion in upgrading its MKI's, Migs. Along with this allocation for defence reaseard has increased by 15%.

Modernisation can only occur during peace. Pakistan has been at war with itself since 2001. And will be engaged till 2010(hopefully, it will end by then). Its economy, has already taken a beating. Defence budget has been decreasing every year. Reality is for you to see, sir. I am just stating the facts.

India is a Poser Country, their population is poor but main thing is to spend on weapons :disagree: Your people are dieing of hunger and AIDS and India never introduced a campaign but only buys weapons. How pathetic that is. ANd then world criticizes North Korea, India's people are no piece better off than North Korea's. They'll have to learn to get a balance. Besides, Pakistan Army is well-prepared to counter any threat. Our deterrence works great

Who cares!?

Seriously people stop trying to reduce the debate on every India related topic onto how poor they are. Talk about the subject. I think a thread about India buying Planes and ships should not care about the fact that there are poor destitute people in India.

It is simply just offtopic! Learn to talk on topic...

Oh and slumdog millionaire was a decent movie, it showed some horrible parts of India... It was directed with a purpose to perhaps fix this broken part about India. I'm pretty sure it wasn't made to be used in every other argument on defence.pk!

Be on topic.

PS: Can I thank him twice for above mentioned thread?

Hopefully we will see this deal come to fruition in this lifetime. The speed with which GoI works all the deals look like true 20 year plan only. Probably they read the story of the rabbit and turtle too many times.

The numbers sound all great, however for an Army that is 3 million strong, the money needed is 3x what you have envisaged for the next 20 years. The biggest issue is the size of the Indian armed forces. China has slightly more but already spends approx. 3x what you are planning to spend and yet feel that it is not enough (which should give you an idea given that they have a much more mature indigenous defence capability than India and can subsidize a lot of the cost yet are still spending between $90-120 billion/yr - they publicly claim $70 billion or so but the reality is a bit different). US cannot be compared for obvious reasons.

Secondly, for Pakistan, modernization of equipment and material goes on because we still allocate money for our defence acquisitions aside from what is being spent on the CI campaign because it gets rolled under the GWOT and Pakistan and the US have arrangements in place to cater to that expense.

India,s Armed Forces are aprox twice the size of Pakistans in nos of Man power. Also roughly about twice the size in Tanks Planes and artillary etc.

India defense budget is about 4 times the size of Pakistans. ie 2009 respective budgets $30 billion for india & $7.6 billion for pakistan.

In other words Per man india spends twice as much.

Another very important fact India only spends 2.5% of GDP on its military. Pakistan is closer to 4.5% this year due to devalution of pakistani rupee this last 12 months.

BLAIN is correct re one point India needs to spend far more then $30 billion to successfully modernise her 3 services to a Western Level like France or Uk with size of its armed forces so big.

Or alternatively reduce the nos by 20%

I would like to see these 2 in service...

Pakistan's defence budget was 290 Billion Rs. Which works out to be $4.4 billion if 1USD = 65 Rs. or $3.6 Billion if 1USD = 80 Rs.

At $4.4 billion, with an estimated GDP of 160 Billion, that works out to be about 2.75% of GDP.

Govt to increase defence budget by Rs100bn

LAHORE: The government has decided to increase the country’s defence budget by Rs 100 billion in the upcoming fiscal year, a private TV channel reported on Monday. The reason given by the government for the budget increase was ‘heavy expenditure in the war on terror’. According to documents relating to the defence budget increase, Islamabad had initially earmarked Rs 343 billion for defence spending last year. But in the face of expenses incurred in the war against terrorism, the defence budget was increased to Rs 378 billion, the channel reported. The document states that the Rs 70 billion increase in the defence budget was necessitated by increase in the salaries and allowances of the armed forces’ personnel. The channel reported that extra funds were needed for the purchase of necessary equipment for the armed forces. daily times monitor
