What I am afraid of is that the poor farmers will not take care of the cows after their productive years and the cows will most probably starve and suffer.

You are wrong. We had some villages near by my office in old company. Villagers used to release Cows which were taken for slaughter by trucks. The cows shall rome around the villages and eat grass and what ever they get to eat. However slaughter them is uncivilized.

Not only that there were lots of Nil gays were there. they will come in farm and eat a lots of crop.
