After initial balk, India reconsidering buying Iron Dome

Indian Army official says Israeli system could provide protection against Pakistan’s short-range tactical nuclear missiles

India is reportedly reconsidering its decision earlier this year not to purchase Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

The all-weather Israeli system, which has proven effective in intercepting rocket fire from Gaza, was first deployed in 2011. India has expressed interest in the system over the past two years because its advanced capabilities would enable it to detect and intercept the “Nasr,” a Pakistani tactical nuclear missile deployed along the Indian-Pakistani border, an Indian Army official told Defense News.

Earlier this year, India decided against purchasing the system. Air Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne, commander of India’s Air Force, said at the Aero India air show in Bangalore in February that the Iron Dome was not suitable for India’s air force.

But a military source told Defense News that India was reconsidering that earlier assessment because Israel was willing to share the technology behind the advanced rocket system.

Iron Dome, whose development by Haifa-based Rafael Advanced Defense Systems was partly funded by the US, is considered among the most advanced missile defense systems in the world.

India is reportedly also interested in purchasing the longer-range David’s Sling system, which is manufactured jointly by Rafael and the Massachusetts-based defense contractor Raytheon.

Good news. If we can get technology transfer, good for our missile defence program.

I don't think we'll get ToT on this one. But if we do it'll be great!!

But arent they very expensive too??? wy not go for a joint venture and make it inhouse than going to buy these?

Nasr isn't a lebanese unguided-rocket. This dome, that dome, for every measure there is a countermeasure, and for every countermeasure there is a counter-countermeasure.

and the counter measure should be developing MARV...

topic...

this system is too expensive.so,no use for purchasing them for a huge quantity.but it'll be useful if some of these batteries accompany with battle groups,to protect them against missiles...what are the other similar kind of platforms are out there, beside PAC-3???

Yara, this system is absolutely useless for a variable trajectory weapon such as Nasr. It has different attack vector profiles, almost impossible to intercept. Such weapons always are. Israelis are mostly hoo-ha because they have Arabs as adversaries, imagine having India, Pakistan or China being their neighbor or adversary. They'd have to stitch their own arses on a daily basis.

It does make sense. Unlike Israel we won't be using them against small rockets but against way more devastating nuclear warheads. This will make some people across the border very very nervous.

I had gone through some reports couple of months back about its interception ratio was 10:6 (Successful)

What does it even mean ? Anti Missile inside Nasr missile ? ;)

If they will share critical technologies of Iron Dome then no problem in purchasing it.

Its a good step by Indian Army. If Indian Army official says Israeli system could provide protection against Pakistan’s short-range tactical nuclear missiles. Then there must had been a study on it. Indian Army is not that Lame. But what will be its range and reaction time ?

ToT will be very friuit full :hang2:

LOL... nah dude... it means... a simple software and seeker upgrade of Nasr will totally defeat the purpose of "Iron Dome".... Such "domes" are to be used against an enemy with almost zero brains.

ABM defense shields on the other hand are effective (not counting the MARV and few other special missiles)

What does it even mean ? Anti Missile inside Nasr missile ? ;)
