Afghanistan signs $11.4m contract to establish prefabricated construction factory

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani inaugurated a road construction project worth $204 million in central Bamyan province of Afghanistan.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, said President Ghani visited Bamyan province, accompanied by high level government officials and inaugurated the Dara-e-Suf to Yakawlang road construction project.

The project was awarded to a Chinese construction firm by the Afghan government earlier in the month of January this year.

The Ministry of Public Works officials said the contract was awarded to the Chinese firm after it completed all the stand norms and conditions for the project by offering the lowest price of $204.9 million.

The officials further added that the Chinese firm along with a Turkish company had participated in the latest tender which was offered two years after the contract was cancelled due higher prices offered by the previous bidders.

The project is expected to be completed over a period of three and half years with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank.

The Director of the Asian Development Bank in Afghanistan, Thomas Panella, earlier said the contract will play a vital role in developing the economy of the country by helping the internal transport in Afghanistan.

The Minister of Urban Development and Housing Syed Sadat Mansoor on Saturday inaugurated three key completed projects worth 921.3 billion Afghanis in southeastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan.

A statement by the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MUDH) said Minister Naderi inaugurated the Islamic Cultural Center built by the ministry over a period of 3 years and bearing a total cost of around 840 million Afghanis.

The statement further added that Minister Naderi was accompanied by the Minister of Higher Education and Minister of Counter-narcotics.

Other high level government officials including the parliament members and other senior government officials also accompanied Minister Naderi, the statement said, adding that the building of Hakim Sanai Ghaznawi tom built by the Stability Consolidation Program of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing with a total cost of around 19.7 million Afghanis.

The ministry also added that Minister Naderi visited the historical township of Bala Hesar in Ghazni after inaugurating the Hakim Sanai tomb.

Minister Naderi inaugurated the Passengers’ Terminal in Ghazni which has been built by the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing with a total cost of 61.6 million Afghanis, the statement added.

According to MUDH, the terminal has been built with an aim to further facilitate transportation from Ghazni to capital Kabul and other provinces of the country.

Naderi also introduced the programs of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing as he was speaking during a gathering following the inauguration of the projects.

He said the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has specific activities to modify the master plans of the key cities of the country, considering the growing population.

The first leader production firm started work in western Herat province of Afghanistan with an aim to curb import of leather products from outside the country worth almost $350 million on annual basis.

The factory was inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of the provincial governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi in Herat Industrial park.

The factory has been built with an investment amounting to $6 million and 3 hundred thousand.

The local officials are saying that the opening of the factory will provide work opportunities for hundreds of the residents of Herat province.

Hotak, a representative of the factory, said this is the first leather processing factory launched in Afghanistan which will use raw materials from the domestic market.

He said around $350 million flow out of Afghanistan on annual basis for the import of leather products.

Provincial governor Rahimi hailed the private sector for the investment to launch the factory and said the first leather processing factory starting work in Afghanistan is a good news as he insisted on the factory officials to make sure that the products are produced with a high quality.

Insisting on further development of industrial park in Herat province, Mr. Rahimi said another industrial park will be opened in this province in the near future.

According to the local officials, around 25 manufacturing firms have started operations in Herat industrial park since last one year.

The Afghan government has approved 24 contracts worth 1.8 billion Afghanistan during a meeting of the National Procurement Commission.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said the meeting was chaired by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in the Presidnetial office.

The statement further added the contracts approved during the meeting include asphalt work of Andkhoi-Qarghan in Faryab, health services contract to be provided by the private sector in the restive parts of the country, consulting services for the implementation of national Citizens Charter projects over a period of 3 years in Balkh, Sar-e-Pul, and Jawzjan, security contract for Kabul, Balkh, Kandahar, and Herat provinces.

The other contracts approved during the meeting includes contract for the generation of certificates for internal auditors of Ministry of Finance, Solar and Information Technology contract for Ghazni university, procurement of 100 CE boards for Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, procurement of agricultural equipment for 17 provinces, construction of water reservoirs with capacity of 500 cubic meters belonging to the water supply and canalization company, contract for the maintenance of the Public Credits Record system.

Contract for the purchase of 95 Pickup vehicles for district chiefs and heads of the provincial independent directorate of local governance, procurement of electric equipment for Badpakh district of Laghman, procurement of 3 card printers for the Ministry of Finance, procurement of meat for the Ministry of Borders and Tribal Affairs, advertisement contract for public awareness belonging to the Ministry of Counter-narcotics, and gas procurement for the related directorates of NDS were among the other contracts approved during the meeting.

The work on 220kV transmission line connecting the northern provinces with the southern parts of the country for the transmission of electricity from Turkmenistan completed in central Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the work concluded over a period of eight months under strict security measures.

The provincial police commandment in a statement said the work on the transmission line was halted due to certain issues in the area nearly thirty six months ago.

The statement further added that the work resumed based on a decree by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and close coordination between the provincial security, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, and local residents.
The completion of the transmission line in Maidan Wardak province has been completed amid persistent tense situation in the province with the rampant Taliban-led insurgency.

The provincial police commandment said the anti-government armed militants did their best to sabotage the work of the project but the security forces remained firm to ensure security so that the project completes on time.

According to the officials, it is expected that the transmission line will further connect with the other provinces and will eventually pave the way for the export of electricity from Turkmenistan to Pakistan besides providing electricity to the Afghan provinces.

The Chief Executive of the Government of National Unity Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday inaugurated the construction of 10 megawatt solar power plant in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.

The Office of the Chief Executive in a statement said Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah arrived in southern Kandahar province today to inaugurate the construction of the plant in Daman district.

The statement further added that the project is jointly being implemented by the private and public sectors and is the first of its kind to be built in southern Kandahar province.

The plant, once built, will provide electricity both the industrial park as well as the residential areas in the district.

The construction of the plant is estimated to bear a cost of around 19 million US dollars and will be funded by the US and India.

Speaking during the inauguration of the construction of the plant, Abdullah expressed hopes that the plant will resolve the majority of the issues of the industrialists.

He said more such projects will be implemented in this province to help resolve the issue of the shortage of electricity.
