Afghanistan Gives 1 Mn Dollars To Pakistan

KABUL, Aug 17, 2010 - Impoverished Afghanistan on Tuesday donated one million dollars to help the victims of unprecedented floods in neighbouring Pakistan, an official said.

Finance minister Hazrat Omar Zakhailwal handed a cheque to Pakistani ambassador Mohammad Sadiq at the end of a press conference in Afghan capital Kabul.

"Even though this aid amount is far less than what is really needed by the flood victims... our government wants to express its solidarity with our brothers and sisters hit by floods," the minister said.

Torrential monsoon rain triggered catastrophic floods which have affected a fifth of the country, wiping out villages, rich farmland, infrastructure and killing an estimated 1,600 people in the nation's worst ever natural disaster.

The United Nations last week launched an immediate appeal for 460 million dollars to cover the next 90 days and UN chief Ban Ki-moon visited Pakistan at the weekend, calling on the world to quicken its aid pledges.

A country like Afghanistan has given 1 million dollar which is much more then France's tiny 400k Donation.Thankfully the whole EU is not selfish like France.

Although the amount is very low, but considering the poverty and problems we have in Afghanistan, it doesnt seem that bad. It is much better than the earthquake donation which GoA gave 100000 dollars plus some medical assistance teams to pakistan.

This amount is indeed Huge considering the devastation that Afghanistan has been facing from decades.
And yes its more about the intention behind the aid that matters rather than the amount!!

How much they donated ??

Saudia has pledged 100 million dollar whereas so far over 20 million dollars have been collected in a telethon they are running for collecting donations for flood victims.

This is apart from 100m dollars

until a few days ago they had pledged around 41m dollars. i am not sure about it now. This saudi donation is new i think.
