The Afghan president has condemned the timing of an American drone strike that killed the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, amid a growing wave of criticism in Pakistan and fears of a diplomatic freeze.
Pakistan’s prime minister is due to meet his security cabinet later today to discuss a response to the death of Hakimullah Mehsud. Pakistani ministers are furious that he was killed just as they said peace talks were due to start.
Mehsud was responsible for thousands of deaths in Pakistan yet politicians have turned their anger on the US, and have promised to review relations.
In a statement issued by the presidential palace in Kabul, Hamid Karzai added his voice to the outcry.
“The attack on Hakimullah Mehsud was carried out in an inappropriate time, we hope that it does not harm the peace efforts as a result,” he said.
