Training the Afghan army has been described as a tough job, and India experienced it first hand last month. The Indian Army, which takes pride in its secular credentials, found itself facing a peculiar situation when Afghan cadets at the Officer’s Training Academy in Chennai complained about their “religious sentiments being hurt” by an officer-instructor there.

There were tense moments after an Afghan cadet was asked to remove a piece of paper on which he had scribbled some religious verses and pasted it in his cabin. A top general was visiting the academy and the cabins were being inspected ahead of his visit. Army officials said cadets are discouraged from displaying religious symbols as it clashes with army’s secular outlook.

The cadet was asked to remove the paper from the wall. He, however, confronted the authorities. The paper was torn when the authorities were removing it. This enraged the cadet, leading to a virtual breakdown in discipline at the academy, army sources said.

Around 15 Afghan cadets locked horns with the major-rank instructor, blaming him for hurting their religious sentiments. More than 40 Afghans are currently training there. Some of the cadets refused to carry out the orders given to them, the sources said.

The matter could well have turned out to be a diplomatic row, had the Afghan embassy here not been informed in time. The Afghan defence attache immediately flew to Chennai to defuse the crisis.

“The defence attache apologised to the commandant on behalf of the cadets. There was a misunderstanding over some religious matter. The cadets expressed remorse over their behaviour,” a senior officer said.

The incident comes at a time when Kabul is expecting India to expand its mentoring role ahead of the withdrawal of US-led forces from Afghanistan in 2014. Also, Afghan cadets are not well-versed in English and this may have led to some miscommunication.

Apart from cadets undergoing training at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, small batches of Afghan army officers are buffing up their English language skills at an army facility in Madhya Pradesh .

Cabin cupboard inspection , Kit layouts etc are sacroscant events.

I think this has to do with perceptions. There is no room for religion inside the barracks in training establishments for Officers.

The Platoon Commander did right by asking them to remove anything that is not permitted.

Had they not been foreign cadets they would have front rolled all night.

Glad it was resolved.

OTA should explain the ground rules to foreign cadets through their embassies before arrival.

Afghans need to have a more professional outlook if they want to develop a formidable army capable of dealing with the Taliban and taking on the hegemonic power to their east . Religion should be private , I hope they would understand .

afghan army with a secular outlook is a must if they have to counter a religious extremist organisation like taliba

very tough job ahead for IA in training the Afghan army.
Good luck...

i think it can solved if service selection board of india take charge of selecting afgan cadits these hyper relisious trade come out during psyco test in ssb

No wonder one day they are taking orders from NATO officers and the next day they are shooting them at point blank.

Front rolled? These bozos should have been withdrawn straightaway and sent back to their parent country since they are a bad influence on other cadets.

There are a set of instructions but they do not include do's and don'ts where religion is concerned as this has never happened before and no one ever thought it would!

Withdrawing them is not a soloution. Being foreign cadets one does have to show flexibility within the bounds of local rules common to all.

As regards the Dos & Donts like those who attend the Staff College these cadets must also be made aware of the ground rules & their own diplomatic staff / Military attaches are best suited for this.

In any case the afgan official who flew down did control the situation. One needs to be careful - sentiments are everywhere.

very professional of the Indian Army officer to uphold secular values of the Indian Armed Forces. This probably was just a misunderstanding

Ya right, shave off all the Shiks beard and take off their turban. Dont you think those are religious thingy. I dont know about Hindu symbols, as Shiks were allowed so does Hindus as well. Only problem is Muslim?? They need to pray 5 times a day. Thats not optional dude. Take it or leave it.

1. Indian Army follows strict discipline and secularism.

Displaying of religious symbols etc. not allowed.

2. Language problem is also there as these Afghan cadets are not well versed in English.

3. Indian Army have hundreds of "Maulvi" as a Junior Commission Officer (JCO) (Religious Teacher) and they gets a salary of Rs. 34800/- (US$ 700 per month as salary)

Job of these Maulvis in the Indian army is to help/perform/educate about Islamic rituals.

4. Every Indian Army cantonment also have mosque so that Muslim officers/soldiers can practice their religion and offer Namaz.

Where has this come from ??

For an Officer, in the fighting arms his religion is that of the troops he commands.

Just in case it has not been read & obviously not understood , the issue here was pasting religious verses in his cabin.

This is not permitted and is applicable to all.

We had cadet officers from Nepal and Botswana in my batch at AFMC. Impeccable behavior. They realize they are representing their armed forces in a foreign land and the responsibility that comes with it. Not to mention the privilege and opportunity of studying at one of the premier institutes. They would also take great pride in their ceremonial uniforms on dress days and parades, going the extra yard to make sure that the boots are just that little bit shinier, the tunics pressed more razor sharp at the creases, and the brass tags more gleaming. ;)
