The US Navy has confirmed that there is an active shooter on the grounds of the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast DC, US media report.

DC Police say they have received reports that multiple people have been shot, according to CBS.

Police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay confirmed at least one person has been shot, but said that that person’s condition was not immediately available.

The shooting happened reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters (NAVSEA) building, the Navy said in a statement. It’s the largest of the Navy's five system commands. It engineers, builds, buys and maintains ships, submarines and combat systems that meet the Fleet's current and future operational requirements.

(CNN) -- At least one person was injured Monday after a person fired shots inside the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy said.

An official told CNN's Barbara Starr that "several" people sustained injuries, according to phoned-in reports from the building.

The incident occurred at 8:20 a.m. when several shots were fired inside the headquarters for Naval Sea Systems Command in southeast Washington, D.C. An "active shooter" remained inside the building, the Navy said.

The Navy first informed the public of the incident in a Twitter message.

A D.C. police officer is among the people shot at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning.

A police spokesman confirmed at 9:20 a.m. that the officer was shot near the room where a lone gunman has barricaded himself after allegedly shooting at least three people on the Navy Yard grounds in Southeast Washington.

The U.S. Navy said that three shots were fired around 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building, where about 3,000 people work.

Police said that at least three, possibly four, people were shot. All are in critical condition, authorities said.

A “shelter in place” order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel, authorities said.

Police closed the 11th St Bridge as well as M St SE between 2nd and 4th streets SE due to the shooting. Entrances to the Navy Yard Metro station remain open.

Shooting at Washington Navy Yard

A U.S. Navy spokesman is reporting that four people have been killed in the shooting rampage at Navy Yard.
Ed Buclatin, the public affairs chief for the Navy Installations Command, tweeted “four killed and eight injured.”
A spokeswoman at Navy headquarters at the Pentagon said she was aware of “reports of multiple fatalities” but said she could not confirm the number.

I know right, oh boy I hope this isn't another one of those...'Muslim gunmen somehow fool all security and shoot and maim dozens' thing.

If it is, I'm done believing this bull$hit. Someone is behind these games.

Lets wait and see what the motives are. But, I have a feeling there's something to it. These surprise attacks always come with certain timing and it always reminds the public that 'terror' is still a threat. That's what I feel like its purpose is. To keep us in a state of fear.

Deaths reported in US Navy base shooting - Americas - Al Jazeera English


Four people have been killed and at least eight others injured in a shooting at the US Navy Yard in Washington, a Navy official told reporters.

Officials initially said the shooter was still at large after the incident on Monday morning, but later reports said one suspect had been contained and that there might be more than one attacker.

Washington Post reported that there were three shooters, including one in military fatigues.

Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett, reporting from the scene, said there was an "enormous police presence" in the vicinity of the Navy Yard, Two helicopters were flying over the complexed and roads were blocked.

The Navy did not officially confirm the number of casualties, but said "several" people had suffered injuries. It said people inside the building had been directed to stay in place.

The Navy said at least three shots were fired at 8:20 am (13:20 GMT) in the headquarters building of the Naval Sea Systems Command.

About 3,000 people work at the headquarters.

Witnesses saw police with rifles running towards the complex as police believed the attacker was hold up inside.

One Navy official said that four people had died and eight others were injured, but other officials suggested caution over those numbers saying the situation was in flux.

A Washington police spokesman said five people had been shot at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, just 2.6 miles from the White House, including a District of Columbia police officer and one other law enforcement officer.

"There was three gunshots straight in a row," said Patricia Ward, who works at the Navy Yard, describing how she first heard the gunfire while having breakfast at the headquarters building.

A few seconds later, Ward said she heard four more gunshots. Security guards rushed in and got people out as fast as they could - "'Run, run, run, 'they told people," Ward told reporters.

NBC News, citing a senior naval officer at the Navy Yard, said at least 12 people had been shot, with four killed and eight wounded. The report could not be independently confirmed.

A Navy official, who asked not to be identified, said several people were dead and several others were injured.

Another Navy official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said more than one gunman may have been involved. The Washington Post reported that there were several gunmen.

The Navy said in a statement the shooting took place at the heavily guarded headquarters, where about 3,000 people work.

The shooting hit the military establishment less than three week after U.S. Army psychiatrist Major Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death for murdering 13 people in 2009 at Fort Hood, Texas, where he gunned down unarmed soldiers in what he later called retaliation for U.S. wars in Muslim countries.

A Washington police spokesman said the first reports of shots were received at 8:36 a.m. EDT (1236 GMT).

The White House urged citizens to follow instructions from authorities and first responders and said President Barack Obama had been briefed.

"The President has been briefed several times about the unfolding situation," a spokesman said. "The President directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials."
