These rankings are surprising to me. Don't see how/why they would be in the top 25 or 50. I guess their alumni have done very well.

According to the methodology (http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU-Methodology-2020.html), they do not only look at the alumni but also at the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (alumni and current staff / researchers /students), number of citations, number of publications published in Nature, Science and two indices and students academic performance.

Apparently the universities you have selected score well when evaluated according to these criteria, even though their image might not be good (I assumed that you are surprised that these universities belong in the top 25 or top 50 because of a bad image that they might have).

I don't believe the schools I picked out have "bad" images, just not "exceptional" ones in terms of academic competitiveness, in my own opinion/knowledge. I went to #45, the Univ. of Illinois Champaign-Urbana for my Ph.D. in solid state physics. Double Nobel physics prize winner John Bardeen was on my thesis committee.

These rankings pretty much only care about academic research in medicine, sciences and engineering. Undergrad experience, business, reputation, etc. is totally unimportant.
