Academic Ranking of World Universities 2013 released:A dismal show by India

I hear a lot of mambo jumbo about India's IIT, but they are not even ranked in the top 300 in the world. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University is known to be more objective and consistent compared to the other two UK based rankings.
Care to shed some light?

There are two main reasons why IIT's rankings are down.

First reason is the opening of many new IITs throughout India expanding the student base and bringing the competition level down by accepting many more students who otherwise couldn't have made it to the IITs.

The second main reason is the holistic approach of the rankings, which also consider the post graduate student quality, and IITs have many streams in post graduation (from engineering to architecture) that do not attract the competitive students.

IIT is famous for churning out high quality undergrad engineering students, specifically. So if you were to look at the successful IITians all over the world who are holding top positions in competitive big corporations, you will notice that a hefty majority of those successful IITians did their engineering undergrad at the IITs, and not something as post graduation in something abstract like architecture.

My university has fallen out of the top 100.

The University of Western Australia's new undergraduate course system is killing us in terms of rankings.

Imagine instead of a specialised thermodynamics unit and a specialised electrical control systems unit, you now have to do one unit that only teaches you 50% of each. Dilution of course standard follows.

Imagine someone like me who wants do a double degree in BEngg and BComm now has to do a Bachelors of Engineering Science with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

In fact I'm not sure if the above is even valid, or if these degrees will even be widely recognised worldwide.

I'm going on exchange next year to UC Berkeley in the US, I could only pick 3 subjects that will be recognised as part of my degree. It staggers belief that UWA won't recognise units from one of the topmost universities in the world.

F@ck this uni, I'm moving to China.

I disagree. Acceptance rate is not part of the methodology use in the ranking.

Somewhat disagree. If you look at subject ranking, Science and Engineering, IIT not anywhere near the top either. (Forget about QS ranking, that is pure crap)

Agree, IIT churned out many top students. It attracts the best from all India.

UWA is a joke. College of Engineering at Cal stands shoulder to shoulder with MIT and Stanford. If you are attending summer school, Haas offers business courses for non-business major.

Agreed. It's the best option I have though, my family, our business, my day job etc are all here.

Yup, summer school. I've looked into Haas, I'm going to study International trade (no relevance that I can think of to my management degree) there, the other two courses are from the COE and I can't for the life of me remember which ones.

Summer is your only option. Non-Bus Ad major can't get into Haas during regular semester.

I am attending the summer classes, (WA winter), next year. However I'm not sure on the exact dates, will have to look it up.

I suppose it's a blessing in disguise, it's Cali during summer after all. Though I dare say our beaches are better.

Summer starts in June.

You will be surprised. Take a road trip along Highway 1.

I never talked about acceptance rate. I talked about the degradation in competitiveness of students since the enlargement of the student base that comes under the umbrella of IIT. It is not a centralized institution, unlike a University or a campus. It is spread all over the country, so while the IIT is surely not the top school for engineering (not even in South Asia), it would not be completely fair to compare it with other centralized universities.

No one claimed that IIT is the top school to go for any subject, however, if one were to look at the success stories of IIT engineering students, it certainly comes among the top. I have seen a lot of such rankings in the past, and it surely has sparkled for quite a while since 90's till 2004-2005. The main thing that goes against IIT engineers is their larger than life egos, and it is not they, but the general public in the country for feeding them this farce.

That (bold part) is the only reason why IIT had been among the top till last few years, however, now all the promising students would drop the IIT for any top schools in the States they can get into. The selection criteria are too biased, outdated, and are corrupted. Nor are the campuses free of discrimination as they are elsewhere.

one day we will have rankings for institutions who conduct best rankings...:hitwall:

One of my professor is from IIT, another is from Nirma University.....Any Indian member here heard Nirma?:)

Don't worry. India grows exponentially.

India's universities will grow with the pace of economic growth. India has one university now, but at 10% growth per year she will have 1,000 of the Universities in 2100!

India supah-powah year 2100!

10% growth per year? You mean GDP % Growth?

Where did you get that number
