IMPHAL: Activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been on a fast demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for the last 14 years, has rejected Aam Admi Party (AAP)'s offer to contest the ensuing Lok Sabha polls under its banner from Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.

Through Just Peace Foundation (JPF), a trust set up by rights activists for the cause of Sharmila's unrelenting crusade against the military act, senior AAP leader Prashant Bhushan proposed her to contest the election.

"Since I don't want to enter politics, I have applied my mind and rejected the offer this morning," Sharmila told reporters on Friday during her routine production before an Imphal court.

The police charged the 'Iron Lady of Manipur' under section 309 IPC (attempt to commit suicide).

"Politics according to me is uncertain and vague as the people cannot keep their faith and trust on the politicians all the time," said Sharmila (42).

Human Rights Alert (HRA) executive director and JPF trustee Babloo Loitongbam said that Sharmila, as usual, has no interest in joining politics.

In the height of the Manipur assembly election in January 2012, Sharmila had termed the politicians as "shameless people", saying that they failed to scrap AFSPA despite their countless promises.

People of insurgency-hit Manipur have been demanding the repeal of AFSPA that gives sweeping powers to the armed forces even to the extent of shooting people on mere suspicion.

A resident of Kongpal Konkham Leikai in Imphal East, Sharmila has been fasting since November 5, 2000, three days after Assam Rifles troops shot dead ten civilians at Malom village in Imphal West in an alleged retaliatory firing.

She is currently being forced-fed through her nose at the security ward of the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences hospital.

AAP thinks anyone in any part of India if doing some good work is only because he/she want to come to politics. Sorry Sir, but everyone isn't Arvind Kejriwal....there are Irom Sharmilas or Mother Teresas also present in India.

Maybe Irom Sharmila should have accpeted it.As heroic as her acts have been, the methods haven't yielded the desired results. If she had contested, she had good chances to win.She could have used the post and powers of an MP to bring more attention to the issue of rape of NE indians by some elements of security forces, mainly from mainland.Till now her sacrifices have been paid just scant lip service, the national media and public which cries its heart out on the rape of women in mainland India, pay almost no attention to the suffering of NE people at the hands of corrupted elements in the security forces. It is as if rape of north east Indians is tolerable just because they look different and are of a different culture than mainland India.

The perception that continued support to the draconian laws and its misuse by shameful elements in security agencies is tolerable as they put down insurgencies is deeply wrong. These acts are what keeps these insurgencies alive as many of the NE Indians feel that mainland cares not for it.Even though they hate these well armed extortionists and smugglers who are insurgents, they feel they are less worse than security agencies as the insurgents usually do no resort to rape in order to earn sympathies of people rather than due to any goodness.

And are lives of Indian soldiers dispensable??Read up why AFSPA cannot be done away with. Without it, CI operations are extremely difficult.

Asking good men to join politics is certainly cheap.

So the dignity of Indian women is dispensable ?Or is it because the victims are of mongoloid race and not "indian" as per the thinking of some mainlanders go ?

There are laws to deal with these things....

AFSPA needs to be repealed in North east . I see nothing wrong with that Demand and Irom Sharmila is greatest Gandhian of our time . Non violence and stuff .

There's much more to it than just that. See how AAP has been approaching almost every activist that has a problem against the Indian State. Their plan is to piggyback on the popularity of such crusaders, many of whom have been fighting for genuine causes within the constitutional framework.

You mean those investigations whose utmost priority is to save the military's nose ?To prove that the atrocity never happened? How many victims of rape by security forces have been given justice till now?How many cases have actually seen justice being done and not sweeping all the dirt under the carpet?

  • Army officers have legal immunity for their actions. There can be no prosecution, suit or any other legal proceeding against anyone acting under that law. Nor is the government's judgment on why an area is found to be disturbed subject to judicial review.
Update yourself or learn more about these draconian laws which are violating international law.I cant post links as this forum still doesnt has me qualified to send a link.

The deployment of military takes place when the situation becomes worse and can no longer be handled by the government, police or CRPF. When the laws and rules that function in the normal situation become ineffective, military is called in. Now, under such circumstances, military cannot be expected to operate under the laws police force is subjected to.

The only protection provided to the armed forces of the union is that before any prosecution, suit or legal proceedings is initiated against any personnel of the armed forces for acting under this Act, prior sanction of the Central Government would be necessary.

I don't think Irom Sharmila fight against AFSPA is anti national or against Indian State..................her peaceful fight against AFSPA is for the people of NE & Manipur which is a State in Indian Union..........................

It's not anti-national, but it's against an Act enforced by the State. But her method isn't extra-constitutional, and that's what is missing in these AAP Topi-Dramas.

All good people belong to AAP. Atleast that's what these turds think!

Oh really? And who determines if the situation is beyond control of normal law enforcement agencies? Is there any mechanism to challenge the legality of why AFSPA ?Can the judiciary of India intervene ?
Read up on it,the AFSPA doesnt allow any action against civil right violations. So the Central government which unleashes the draconian law on its own citizens is expected to provide sanction for action against forces it sent itself in the first place?
So the solution to a sensitive law and order situation is to let crimes against its citizens go scot free, further enraging the citiens and worsening the situation even further ?
who determines if the situation is beyond control of normal law enforcement agencies?
Lets talk about Kashmir. U think kashmir police is enough for law and order??
In the last 21 years, 43,460 people have been killed in the Kashmir insurgency. Of these, 21,323 are militants, 13,226 civilians killed by militants,, and 5,369 security forces killed by militants.
Approximately 20,000 to 25,000 have died in Nagaland alone, according to media reports. The South Asia Terrorism Portal reports that more than 13,000 people have died in the other Northeastern states since 1992.

Just think what would have happened if only the Police were to deal with them.AFSPA is mostly deployed in areas whether the security forces are fighting terrorists who aim to break away from the nation.

It is our restraint and democratic setup because of which we still told talks with terrorist groups like ULFA and Kashmiri separatists still move around freely and give anti India speeches. Had it been China, they would have crushed any movement like they did in Tibet.
