ISLAMABAD: In an apparent desperate bid to strengthen the shaky power set-up, whose fragility was exposed by the dramatic events of Monday culminating in the forced abandonment of the NRO, the government is seriously considering a proposal to change its complexion to that of a national government by taking the PML-N and the PML-Q on board.

According to sources, President Asif Ali Zardari andPrime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani have already decided to take the coalition partners as well as the major opposition parties into confidence on the proposal.

The decision was taken in Tuesday night’s meeting of the PPP, the sources said, adding the proposal was also discussed with the allied parties — the MQM and the JUI-F. Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar, when contacted, said that presently there was no proposal to form a national government. The PPP was elected for five years, he said, adding the party was already working in alliance with its coalition parties.

On Wednesday, the president held a crucial meeting with Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and later met JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Reportedly, both the leaders agreed to support the proposal.

According to the sources, the president and the prime minister held a one-on-one meeting just after the cabinet meeting.Sources said during the informal meetings with the PML-N leadership, an informal invitation was conveyed to them to join the government for the implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD).

Besides, a source said, a key federal minister, who is close to Zardari, contacted the PML-Q on the president’s direction. However, both the parties have not given a positive reply due to trust deficit, the sources said, adding Zardari has asked his close aides to persist with their efforts.

The News also learnt that the government was considering to form two committees headed by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to make formal contacts with the PML-Q and the Fata parliamentarians.

During his meeting with Fazlur Rehman, the president said that the PPP would not let anyone destabilise democracy. He also thanked the JUI-F for its constant support as an ally. Fazal assured Zardari that his party would abide by all the agreements as an ally.

Zardari said that a committee, comprising PPP and JUI-F members, would be constituted to address the matters between the two parties. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan will be the convener of the committee. Other members are Syed Khursheed Shah, Rehman A Malik and Qamar Zaman Kaira from the PPP while Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Azam Khan Swati and Senator Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani would represent the JUI-F.
