In 1971, Bangladesh was released from the grip of Pakistan after a nine month deadly struggle for liberation, in which, according to official reports, three million Bangladeshis were declared to have died. There were many reasons why the (then) East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, wanted to be separated. One of the strongest was that the rulers of (West; now simply) Pakistan had, since its birth, been trying to make the country one of the most powerful representatives of Islam on Earth. The people of East Pakistan, however, wished to have a secular state where they could live harmoniously together with Hindus and others.

During its 23 years of rule since its separation from India in 1947, however, Pakistan has worked hard, with all its soul, to make the Bangladeshi people hostile to its neighboring country -- which happens to have a Hindu majority -- India.

Pakistan not only spread hatred against non-Muslims; it also tried to galvanize Islamic sentiment throughout the eastern areas of Bangladesh, where the majority of the people were moderate Muslims and had different beliefs, including Sufism and Bauls, a local, non-violent, friendly culture. Pakistan has been so bigoted and chauvinist, it even banned the songs of Rabindranath Tagor, the famous novel laureate in literature, by considering him a Hindu.

Meanwhile, the unaccompanied voice of Sheik Mujibur Rahaman, later the father of the nation of Bangladesh, started to roar against the policies of Pakistan. As his rulers and political rivals were Islamic, he established a counter-policy: the creation of an independent, secular state. In 1971, India and the Soviet block strongly supported the independence of Bangladesh. The US and nearly all the Muslim counties, however, stood behind Pakistan.

When Bangladesh finally attained its freedom on December 16, 1971, all the Arabian Nations were highly discontented over Bangladesh's success.

At the time, as international aid was badly needed for the new, war-torn nation, India and Bangladesh lobbied the governments of the powerful and rich states of the world through diplomatic channels. The supreme leaders of Bangladesh and India directly asked – begged -- for recognition of the newborn country. There was, however, very little response from the Muslim brothers of Bangladesh, for whom the people of Bangladesh nonetheless have feelings of the greatest esteem.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia frowned on recognizing Bangladesh until the killing of the founder of nation, Sheik Mujibur Rahaman, at the hands of fundamentalist elements, in 1975.

It was Israel, where Golda Meir was then prime minister, that spontaneously recognized Bangladesh on February 4, 1972. But unfortunately and interestingly, Bangladesh was not even gentle enough to accept the recognition. It is still mysterious why the first government of Bangladesh did not shake the outstretched hand of Israel. In course of time, Bangladesh adopted the "No peace, no recognition, no negotiation with Israel" policy of the Khartoum Conference that took place a few months after the Six Day War.

Bangladesh -- no matter who has been the ruler or what has been its form of government -- still has not changed her policy on Israel. Many of the Arab countries, where Islam was born, at least have diplomatic relations with Israel.

But Bangladesh, a distant country of 170 million people, that officially declares itself secular, does not have any relations with Israel. It is even prominently written on Bangladeshi passports, "ALL COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD EXCEPT ISRAEL".

Anti-Semitism is so high in the atmosphere that even some secular, progressive journalists have decided that it is not safe to speak out against the wrong perceptions of their compatriots. It is unjustifiable. I myself am suffering from this deprivation, as I want to visit that very historic, beautiful land.

Once Taiwan (Formosa) and South Africa were also banned to the people of Bangladesh. But that was erased from the Bangladeshi passport in course of time. Only Israel remains a supposedly hostile nation-state.

Sadly, this decision was not derived from the opinion of the masses, It is not known to more than 70% of Bangladeshi Muslims citizens living in the rural areas that there even is a country named Israel. Neither was it ever a political issue, nor it is mentioned in any election manifesto of the country.

It was a spontaneous decision, an untold accord among the politicians, not to have any kind of relations with Israel. The influential leaders of the country love to visit Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

There is the lame excuse by the oligarchy that it would be a political issue and that Muslim sentiment will be outraged if Bangladesh had relations with Israel. The excuse is a scarecrow. People of this country think of having electricity and the price of commodities -- not about relations with Israel.

Both countries could benefit so highly from a relationship. Israel could directly import garments and textile supplies -- nice garments with very easy prices. And Bangladesh could earn a lot of foreign currency. This country could have the benefit of sophisticated accessories, machines and the technical assistance of Israel in so many different sectors of development. Unfortunately the invisible barrier has thus far been too strong.

Even if Israel imports 100% of textile and garments from Bangladesh, I have doubts about how big it will be. The reason why Israel is not recognized as a state is because Bangladesh still holds that the country was established on an illegal basis. If you think it is a Muslim issue, you can ask the civil society many of whom are atheists what they think, they ll tell you the same thing. Anyway, Israeli supporters have a habit of "Either you are with us or you are a Jew hater", which is quite pathetic imo.

It was imposed on you by the erstwhile Pakistan!

Bangladesh does not poke its nose in any controversial international issues. BD will never recognize Israel untill it is overwhelmingly supported by OIC. Bangladesh yet to recognize Kosvo despite repeated request from USA, as Russia did not recognize it yet. I hope I am clear.

PS: Kosovo is a muslim country.

.
The Arab nations had sympathy towards Bangladesh that time! In 1974 the OIC summit was to be taken place in Pakistan, the Arab leaders requested Sheikh Mujib to join the OIC in that summit but Mujib expressed his condition that Pakistan had to recognize Bangladesh before that! The Arab leaders then forced Pakistan to recognize Bangladesh and thus Mujib joined the summit and Bangladesh became a member of OIC!! Dunno why the article is bound to make Bangladesh against the Muslim nations!!

Cry me a river buddy. Bangladesh was born out of Pakistan's wound. We had our differences, we fought, both sides committed excesses and we acknowledge that but India's policy failed and Pakistan has nothing to do with that. Your butchers in uniform the BSF mercilessly murder border-jumpers and then you blame it on us ? It's your own doing that bred hatred between India and Bangladesh. Today, I feel that both Pakistan and Bangladesh are closer to each other than they were as a single nation. No matter how many differences you try to create between us, we will remain kin.

I ll tell you a recent story. Our Foreign Minister Dipu Moni wanted to recognize Israel and start diplomatic relation with them, but members of the AL party themselves opposed this, thus this did not happen. It has nothing to do with Pakistan, we are more than capable of making our own decisions.

Thats the reason that they voted against you for a free pass to the European market in the trade summit that happend a month earlier.

Well there were mainly two reasons why BD opposed the free pass.

1.) It is unprecedented that countries can be offered free pass in the EU due to environmental disasters(flood).

2.) It would hurt our market.

In fact BD only had problems with like 7 out of 65 products or something, meaning the could go ahead and give the free pass to Pakistan in the other 58 or so products. So this had nothing to do with enmity or brotherhood, that had everything to do with genuine reasons.

It's their right to protect their business interests in the EU markets and we acknowledge that. Sure, we frowned about it a bit and said that it shouldn't have happened but that was it. I would also like to point out that this point proves that Bangladesh is in charge of themselves and need no dictation from anyone regarding their national interests, leaving the OPs point, invalid.

israelis did try to establish contact with BD during 71, specially through the Bengali political counselors in Pakistan Washington D.C. embassy. Late Shah M S Kibria (AL), who was serving in D.C. later recounted that israelis promised whatever number of weapons & money BD needed. In exchange israel demanded BD recognition & establishing diplomatic relations after independence. The Bengali diplomats consulted then rejected Israel's proposition. The reasons Shah M S Kibria gave was # BD considers Arab & Muslim world as brothers & stands with Palestinian's legitimate right to their own land # BD cannot afford to alienate itself from Arab world's oil resources & market for a tiny sliver of land called israel

one of the most biased and bs article... First part of the article contradicts with the second part.. It says Bangladeshis are secular thats why they couldnt match Pakistan..... Again it says anti-semitism is high in Bangladesh... lol..... Firstly There was no religious based problem among pakistanis and bangalis, it is the only thing that binds pakistan and bangladesh strongly at present. Secondly recognizing Israel? Whats that?? Is it a country?? Oops. Where?? I thought palestine is there which is recognized by Bangladesh and we love them... Many Bangladeshis volunteered PLO... There is a deal between Bangladesh and Palestine under which Palestinian cadets are trained in Bangladesh. I don't know who wrote this BS article but let me tell you villagers study in madrassas and madrassa students will be the first to react against israel.

my comments did try to show you when you claimed that BD is more closer to Pakistan when compared to INDIA.
and to your info, the GOI does not have motives of swaying the neighbours decession in favour of us.
The best way to win collectively is to "First do what is best of themself and also doing what is best for the Group"
we have always supported any country that does the above said line.
