So today I went to visit the museum of the Paris police prefecture,a small but very pleasant museum which is at the third floor of an actual police station in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.

It now contains evidence, photographs, letters, memorabilia, and drawings that reflect major events in the history of France (including conspiracies and arrests), famous criminal cases and characters, prisons, and daily life in the capital such as traffic and hygiene.

Exhibits include lot and lot of interesting historical documents, uniforms, many weapons and tools used by criminals, police equipments etc.

Just some pictures I took...

"Sword of justice" (XVII-XVIIIth century)

One of the most interesting thing is maybe this...

a real guillotine blade.

Above is written "Real guillotine blade used on place de Grève (in Paris) during the revolution." It's in steel and weighs 8,8kg!

Weird feeling to be in front of a thing that was really used to behead countless people...

Of course there's much more to discover, although the museum is small took me several hours to see everything in details. And the entry is entirely free. In case you are in Paris one day that could be worth the visit... and the personnel is so nice...

Thanks for sharing. Great stuff. I love the uniforms. I mean how did they afford such elaborate uniforms ways back in 1700s?

I would sure drop in when I am in Paris next. We have something like this not too far from my place and in the city my brother is serving as police officer ~ Sheffield.

guillotine is the symbol of the excesses of a revolution. The French Revolution was a good one on the whole. Yet there were un-necessary deaths.

It is definitely on my to see list when I visit Paris

Hey, @Vergennes do you ever watch CrimewatchUK or Crimewatch Files [which covers cases solved] on Youtube? I often enjoy watching a episode in the evening. Real, gritty, down to earth programmes. Do you have anything like that in France with English subtitles?
