There are ~38,330,000 college students currently studying at 2,663 universities and colleges in China as of 2018, making China's higher education the world's largest in scale.

The quality of China's higher education keeps improving during the past decades, as indicated by the rapid rising in world university rankings. Both the hardware/facilities as well as the academic reputation are getting close to or has already achieved world class, as a result of the country's enormous input into higher education.

There is a clear trend that Chinese universities and colleges are becoming more and more international. China is currently the third largest receiver of international students, and is predicted to surpass UK in 2020:

However, in this thread, I am not going to post much about the academic aspect of the university, as there are a lot of rankings and assessment reports available, but rather focus on the campus and facilities, etc, to give you a direct feel of studying in Chinese universities.
From my experiences and observation, in terms of hardware, besides research labs, which are of paramount importance, Chinese universities generally have gigantic state-of-the-art libraries, gyms, stadiums and teaching buildings, etc.
Xiamen University Library:
Tianjin University Gymnasium
About the dorms, for Chinese students, 4-bed room with ACs and private bathroom has long become standard. In general, Chinese student pay around 150 USD per YEAR (the tuition is around 700 USD per year for Chinese student on average, as a reference) for on-campus housing, you got more than you paid for.
Typical dorm room layout for Chinese student.
International students, for those self-sponsored, they can live in hostels comparable to star hotels. Even those sponsored by scholarship from Chinese government, they can stay in hostels with single or 2-bed rooms.
University campuses they can be broadly categorized to several typical styles:
the first is those old campus with ~100 year history, a lot of old buildings with a combination of Chinese and western designs.
Representatives: Soochow University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, Yunnan University, etc.
Soochow University
Then we have those campuses built in the 1950s, usually with huge soviet influence. Some people like it, some people don't.
Representatives: Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, etc.
Harbin Institute of Technology
Campuses built in the 1970s to 80s generally have featureless grey dark buildings with the least consideration to aesthetics.
Representatives: usually universities with shorter history, which are established in the late 1970s to 80s, but there are exceptions, such as the University of Science and Technology of China, USTC, which were relocated from Beijing to Hefei, in the late 60s and early 70s, with a lot of buildings built through 70s and 80s...
University of Science and Technology of China
And then we have those campus with a lot of modern or even futuristic architectures.
Representatives: Shenzhen University and new campuses established by different universities.
Shenzhen University
Of course, majority of campuses have buildings from different era, however, the general characteristics and foundation have been laid down and determined depending on the time of construction.
In the following posts, I will present a collection of videos showing the above aspects of Chinese universities one by one.
