Romania's President accused the Prime Minister and other political rivals of waging a "failed coup" against him with a referendum on his impeachment that he survived.

Traian Basescu said on Monday that those who "organised this failed coup should be held responsible before the state institutions”.

His remarks point to deep political hostility that remains far from resolved in one of Europe's poorest countries and which threatens to slow reforms.

The referendum was organised by the government of Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

The European Union and the United States have expressed concern that Ponta's government violated the rule of law by trying to impeach Basescu.

Basescu survived the referendum yesterday, but only because low turnout invalidated the outcome. Romanians voted overwhelming to oust him.
