900 on strike for more toilet time at Vietnam city factory | Society | Thanh Nien Daily

Around 900 workers at a South Korean bag factory in Ho Chi Minh City went on strike Thursday demanding better food and more toilet time.

The workers of Shilla Bags Vietnam said toilet time is fixed between 8:30 and 10 every morning, meaning five minutes per person.

They share several toilet cards that they must present to the toilet managers and sign their names any time they use the facility.

A worker said many toilets in the women's section were broken, so there’s not enough time for everyone.

Workers also complained about unhygienic meals, with rocks in the rice and maggots in the soy sauce.

They also asked for a new labor union, saying the current one is not made up of employee representatives.

Tran Thanh Tho from the District 12 labor office, who has been assigned with dealing with the strike, said workers are supposed to file a complaint first and go on strike only when their complaint is ignored.

Tho said the company pays salaries based on number of hours worked “so it has to keep tight control.”

The company guard refused to let a Thanh Nien reporter visit the site and said company leaders were absent.

Working conditions are usually shit. Even in Vietnam in foreign owned restaurant, my mom used to work for Dung Lo Voi (one of the big gun in South Vietnam in the 90s). She had to deal with foreigners and hiring workers was a part of her many many duties.

I guess the good think is that these workers will carry back to Vietnam what they had learn in term of collective bargaining.

Not a laughing matter at all. People are still people. Dignity must be preserve. Wealth inequality is natural but the lack of empathy that come with it is erghh.

Seem like we forgot to burn up this factory during the riot :pop:

I didn't know the factory provided food. In the west we either bring our own food or go out to eat. I certainly would not eat the maggot infested rice...simply disgusting. This goes to show that even Koreans that Vietnamese view as brothers to them are just untrue.

Since I live in the west. Do you think this sort of factory allow the workers to go outside and buy food during lunch time? No. Do you think they would provide adequate refrigerator for food? No. Or adequate microwave to heat them up??

No comparison to the west. That is the world, profits trump humanity.

*I strongly condemn the burning of Taiwan/China factories in Vietnam, especially those in Binh Duong despite whether or not they had harshly treat their worker.*

People often forgot that Koreans committed war crimes during the Vietnam War. We never heard about that. Beside, with this whole south china sea issues, they are more friendly with the Philippines. I have nothing against the Koreans, but they need to treat other people better. The whole treatment of vietnam bride should be Korean national shame. But I am glad that the Koreans do things to bring awareness and trying to fix that.

You should be ashamed of yourself

You should be ashamed of yourself

I agree with this sentiment but the original poster isn't Korean. Any countries as a host, cannot treat its guest well should be ashamed. I already said my piece about the violent turn of the anti china protest, I won't repeat it.

This is how these big corporations works. Their foremost and main objective is to make profit for itself. Sadly, it is happening in China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and virtually all developing countries by these corporations from developed countries.

This kind of factory management is outdated. The factory owner will be prepared to face legal charges

If the management can work out a rewarding system on say, piece-meal basis, for individual and/or per work group that could solve the problems avoiding workers from abusing factory rules getting paid time-off for extended stay in toilets

However, the unhygienic and broken toilets plus the dirty food are not acceptable anywhere in the world
It is the factory management's obligation to provide working conditions which are within the rules and norms stipulated in Vietnam for the workers

The workers' protests and strikes are well justified
