PATNA: Eight security personnel were killed and four Maoists gunned down in a daylong encounter in Dumari Nala forest area bordering Aurangabad and Gaya districts in Bihar on Monday. The daylong encounter, about 172km from state capital Patna, saw 17 IED explosions.
A helicopter was sent to evacuate the injured jawans from the Sarkha Ka Bathan area inside the forest, but nobody could be evacuated till the report was filed. According to sources, the helicopter was forced to return to Patna as the Naxalites engaged in heavy firing and the helicopter could not land there.
"The search operation has been going on since last two days after we had a tip off that a group of Maoists led by 'Sandeep Ji' of Bihar Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) was moving there. On Monday the ultras started blasting IEDs and the security forces who went inside the jungle got trapped. They started firing indiscriminately after the blast of the IEDs," said a senior officer.
Magadh range DIG Sourabh Kumar said he has got information about a fire-exchange between security forces and Naxalites, but refused to say anything about casualties. He said Aurangabad SP Babu Ram has been rushed to encounter site and reinforcements are on their way.
Neighbouring districts have also been asked to assist in the operation.
