Picture worth a thousand words. I have been taking picture for the better part of last 8 years, and I find it therapeutic looking at tranquil and calm picture
On the same way, Military history are recorded both by written documentary and photo documentary, and these picture represent a milestone or an historical event that one will never, or should never be forgotten. So, without further ado, here are the 8 most important moment captured by either Picture or Painting. bear in mind the number does not represent any order...
1.) Oliver Hazard Perry transferring from USS Lawrence to USS Niagara
Most commonly recognized as the finest moment of US Navy. The painting, depicting an resolute Commodore Oliver H. Perry transferring from his flag ship USS Lawrence to USS Niagara.
There are basically 5 or 6 version of paint to a variation of documentation of said event, but most of them feature Perry Standing up and pointing to the Direction of USS Niagara, with the backdrop of an waving US flag and Cannon Shell explode both side of the same sampan. Perry order his sailor to row to USS Niagara. While in the real event, Perry most likely was sitting down and was not pointing, and the lifeboat would probably absent of any US flag.
The event is made famous after the engagement that Perry fought, ironically, before the event captured by painting, Perry was actually abandoning his flag ship USS Lawrence, which name after his best friend. The story were made famous by 2 small events. The first being the flag that Perry Clutching during the transit is the now famous motto/battle cry for US Navy "Don't Give Up The Ship" which is actually the dying word of his best friend James Lawrence. Another event is the telegraph Perry send after he had won in Battle of Lake Erie, which said
Which popularize the even that Perry Defeat the Britain Royal Navy Frigate line during the Battle of Lake Erie.
2.) The sinking of USS Arizona
Every war have a begining, a process and the end, while not many detail are going to remembered smack in the middle, most people usually remember how it started and how it ends. And this moment is exactly just that for the American to enter WW2.
It all begins here, at Pearl Harbor. A lot of thing we can overlook, but the sinking of the US most pride and joy battleship (back then) is not something people could overlook easy. On that day, 8 Battleship was hit, 4 were sunk and the other 4 were seriously damage. Of the 2403 killed, about 2000 of them are dead on their ship, and the sinking of Arizona take the cake, with the ship sunk in just 17 mintues, and bring down 1100 sailor with it.
Perhaps more people will remember the Presidential address the next day (over the international date line) where the famous word were said "Yesterday, December 7, 1971, a date which will live in infamy" But before all that happening in the congress, this is how it started. And people back home will remember this is what they will revenge.
3.) Flag raising in Iwo Jima
Many battle have fought over during WW2, many battle had won, and many battle had lost. Most people will only ever know those battle by the location they fought in, places like Cherborg, Carentan, Leyte or Guadalcanal are not much other than a name to most people mind. Most of us won't be able to put a picture on what's going on for those battle. In come the flag raising of Iwo Jima
5 Marines and 1 Corpsman raise a flag on a still hot mountain, and no mistake, one of the world most famous war photograph is arguably "staged" for the camera (The second raising is for a bigger flag so people down hill can see better). Basically turning an unknown island into household name. It was the well know WW2 photograph as well as possible the most reprinted photograph of all time.
What is so important about this photograph? You may ask. This photograph represent the hard earn battle the marine fought for, and in the end, this flag is a typical monument to remind people back home what all those sacraifice is for. Raising this flag will not get you a medal of honor, but it did score a pultizer prize. And become immortal.
4.) Atomic Bomb over Nagasaki
Today, we all scare about a Nuclear War, and it is most likely the most talked about topic in any defence related forum (especially here on PDF ) And so this is what make this photograph famous.
Over the course of our history, only 2 nuclear weapons were deployed in anger and resulting civilian casualty. Both time in Japan, and one is Hiroshima and the other time is in Nagasaki
As I said 2 photo ago, most people will not remember what was going on during the war, and they will most definitely remember how the war start and how the war ends, well, this is the polar opposite of the other photo. This is how WW2 end.
I guess, in a way, looking at this photo, and with its erie mushroom cloud. It just remind people how scary nuclear weapon was. And there are no surprise that Ronald Reagen determined to end the cold war in his time after seeing yet another interpretitation of nuclear strike media, only this time is was a fake program "The Day After"
5.) The first moon landing
What can i say, hater is gonna hate, you may think this photograph is staged, or it's fake, or it was made in some Hollywood studio, but honestly, this photograph was famous not becase it show some dude walking on the moon Well, that's that) but what it basically represent. Human finally break the space barrier.
Much like the first time human flies or travel in a ship, this photgraph represent human conquering space. And it means when we look up in the sky. We knew whatever we saw could be reached, it maybe 10 years from now, 100 years from now or whatever time it takes. As long as we keep the dream alive, somehow, we will get there
That's why when that "dude" was leaving his lunar module, he said
"One small step for man, One giant leap for mankind"
6.) Shuttle Power
Another photograph from space age. This time this photo is a bit subtle. But the impact is there none the less.
Space Shuttle is one of the way (It waas the only way sometime during the 80s) to go into space and we can reuse them. Most rocket back then were one off and in fact, only US and Russia today have the capcbility to launch reusable orbitor into space. And with those, only the US had the capability to launch manned reusable orbitor.
And with the 5 Orbitor Vehicle (Or commonly known as Space Shuttle) NASA had realised the dream of space travel. While other country still trying to make their very first orbitor, all 5 (there were actually 6, the Test Vehicle Enterprise is a fully equipped orbitor tester) were already made in 1970s and retired in 2011s, of course 2 of them are unfortunately broken up during reentry and 14 astronnauts pays the ultimate price.
7.) When YF-22 met YF-23
One of the most exciting moment of Air Force history undoubtedly is the fly off between YF-22 (Which later make into F-22) and YF-23 whic hended up in museum.
The fly off is a momentus time when the world have move on to stealth, what's more important is that this picture was taken in 1990s and today, 25 years later, the same aircraft is the only aircraft that fielded an airforce. The F-35 camee close with 168 planes made and the other are simply still on single digit phototype.
What make this photo famous is that we will probably never going to see the F-22 fly alongside the F-23 ever again, and this photograph is as close as it can get. While there were talks to materialize the YF-23 program, be it NATF or Stealth Bomber project, nothing had came to fruitriction. Realising this, it would make an almost perfect photograph marred by a touch of sadness.
8.) Marlboro Marine
This probably not very well know outside the US, this is James Blake Miller, or the press would dubbed him "Marlboro Marine"
This photograph was taken just after an operation during Second Battle of Fallujah. Where the marine battled the Iraqi Insurgent, 7 days into the battle, this picture was taken on a rooftop in Fallujah and instantly trasnformed Miller into the famous "Marlboro man". He became an instant celebrity and people start know him by his name, his determined look on the photograph and of course the damn cigarette.
What make him famous is not that 15 miuntes of fame, but rather what happened to him after the print have been largely forgot. He was discharged on medical ground from the Marine in 2005, Married the same year but divorce just a year after. He has been a sufferer of PTSD and has been collecting disability cheque and now living an a squlid condition up in the appalachian mountain, with his own soliditude. He is the face of every American Veteren. He is the face of average soldier and more than that, a face of PTSD.
When soldier like me look at this photo, you will see yourselves in it. That is what make this photo famous, and this is how this photo become a powerful symbol.
