I m assuming the 71% must be expecting modi to come in their neighborhoods and clean himself. They need to take up their own fucking responsibility.

I agree that there may not be trash bins in some areas but I am talking about the habits of the people who have trash bins but still do not use it.

You can find such people in every country, just ignorant they are.... But many/most people do use the bin if provided.

This is how it goes

1) Trash bin is too far away from their home. BTW no one wants the trash bin in front of their home too.
2) People do not want to go near the trash bin as it's dirty & stinky hence they throw the trash from a few feet away. Their skills are not so good so the result is trash all around. The next person in line will throw the trash from even farther distance to avoid the trash that's already present around the trash bin thereby creating a wider circle.

and this goes on and on and on

The trash pickup person picks up the trash from the bin which is almost empty. No one bothers about the trash all around.

And this happens because there is no regular cleaning or pickup of garbage by the municipal authorities and it is but obvious that people would like to stay away from that stinking place.

I am afraid you are wrong my friend. This happens with Indians even in US where trash is picked quite regularly on the dot.

Even here in the US there are two categories of people -

The first category are OCD about cleanliness and would put even a traditional Indian Brahmin to shame. They do not touch bathroom doors with their hands rather use a paper, they do not touch the shopping carts unless it is cleansed with sanitizer etc.

The second category is totally indifferent to the word cleanliness.

But both these categories put the trash in the trash bins while some Indians didn't. I actually was asked by some local guys why Indians were placing their trash bags on the side of the trash bin and not inside it. It was embarrassing to say the least.

The issue was the trash bin have lids to prevent them from spreading the odors. The people are supposed to open the lids, place the trash bags in the bin and close the lids.

The first category of locals used disposable hand gloves while disposing the trash while the second category just used their hands. Incase of these Indians, they were similar to the first category of the locals. They did not want to touch the lids of the trash cans but at the same time they did not want to take the trouble of using disposal gloves for disposing the trash. Hence they just left the trash bags on the side of the trash bins. It is to do with the mentality and it needs to change.

Swachh bharat is not about the govt. cleaning up the mess.

Its about CITIZEN stop creating the mess and cleaning up when they Do create the mess.

Its a mission and not a project to "fail".

Completely agree.
And this is why this mission will fail.
After a millennium of rolling around the mud (due to Islamic oppression), there's a "dirty gene" inside Hindu Indians which draws them towards filth. India will remain dirty for perhaps a few more centuries before this "dirty gene" is bred out of Hindu Indians.

NEW DELHI: In what could be a wake-up call for the Centre to fix weaknesses in the Swachh Bharat initiative, nearly 71% respondents in an online poll conducted by a social media group feel cleanliness in their cities and towns has not improved much in the past one year and want a greater municipal-citizen connect.

The online poll on "localcircles", which has over 3 lakh participants, provides a strong feedback that municipalities need a big technology and skill upgrade and need to improve actual delivery of sanitation services at the ground level. Involving citizens in the cleanliness drives as well as in advocacy will also help, the poll indicates.

Swachh Bharat mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2 last year.

The poll has brought to light the big gap in capacity of municipal bodies, which are primarily responsible for collection, transportation and treatment of both solid and liquid waste in urban areas.

According to the poll, 94% respondents felt municipal bodies need a major upgrade in skills, processes, equipment system and leadership as well. Some 96% felt municipal and city leaders should connect with citizens for the success of Swachh Bharat mission.

A senior government official said the findings of such surveys will help in planning the next course of action. "Efforts are being made to sensitize the municipal authorities and we have been monitoring the progress. It's a time taking programme. We are providing technical and financial assistance to urban local bodies to implement the scheme," the official added.

According to latest government data, 1.42 lakh tonnes of solid waste was generated per day in urban areas in July and only 15.33% of it was processed, indicating how under-equipped municipal bodies are to handle the mammoth task. They also face a problem in terms of lack of a dedicated municipal cadre that can bring qualified economists, public policy graduates, environmentalists and engineers into city administrations.

While one of the key components of the mission in urban areas to create more public toilet facilities, over three-fourth of respondents in the online poll said the availability of toilets has not increased in the one year. More than 70% of the respondents also pointed out how local municipalities are not seriously engaged in the scheme and driving the "cleanliness/ civic sense" initiatives on the ground.

Considering that cities are competing with each other to get the Smart City tag, 88% of the respondents said that municipal bodies that implement Swachh Bharat mission effectively should be considered as the key parameter for this scheme.

Even an analysis of the cities and towns that have been shortlisted for three major urban development scheme — Smart City, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana — shows how the common underlying concern is ensuring sanitation under all these programmes. Most of the urban areas have poor ranking so far their Swachh Bharat rankings are concerned.

The urban component of Swachh Bharat Mission includes construction of 1.04 crore individual household toilets, over five lakh community and public toilet seats and 100% door-to-door collection of solid waste and its transportation and disposal.

Not surprised where 90% people do not know what Swach Bharat mission really means. Modi has asked people to keep clean atmosphere and granted funds for some specific work. Those specific works are doing alright. However just because it says swach bharat some people think he will take responsibility of cleaning entire and other system will not exits. May be you met/seen the wrong set of Indians. I've also lived good share of my life in a foreign country and most Indians I met lived by that country's standards of cleanliness. So I am afraid I have to disagree with you on this issue...
