Anniston Army Depot partners to rebuild Saudi tanks

ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. (April 12, 2012) -- Anniston Army Depot recently contracted to overhaul 143 M1 Abrams tanks for Saudi Arabia's Royal Saudi Land Forces through a partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems, at Lima Army Tank Plant in Ohio. An additional 129 tanks are awaiting funding.

Approximately 326,000 direct labor hours are expected for the installation through this program, according to Michael Epps, a depot program manager. Anniston Army Depot employees will disassemble and sandblast the vehicles, then perform needed repairs to the hulls and turrets.

"The vehicles coming in for this program are all M1A2 tanks and will be reconfigured through this program to M1A2S, which is the Saudi version of the M1 Abrams tank," said Epps.

Epps said the installation will play a key role in refurbishing components for the vehicles by rebuilding the Gunner's Primary Sight assembly, computer control panel, elevating mechanism assembly, gunner's control assembly and other parts for each tank.

Once structural repairs are complete, the hulls, turrets and components will be shipped to Lima, where the tank will be assembled by General Dynamics Land Systems.

This program extends a partnership between General Dynamics Land Systems and Anniston Army Depot that began in early 2011 when the depot assisted in upgrading 57 M1A1 and M1A2 tanks to the M1A2S variant.

Saudi Arabia requests logistics supply support from US

29 November 2012

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) for blanket order requisitions under the cooperative logistics supply support arrangement (CLSSA) to Saudi Arabia.

Under the estimated $300m FMS order II, Saudi Arabia has requested funding for CLSSA blanket order requisitions for spare parts of M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks (MBTs)
, M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWVs), support vehicles and other associated logistics support services.

.The potential sale is expected to provide the Royal Saudi Land Forces (RSLF) Ordnance Corps with a contractually assured supply line for key vehicle repair parts required to maintain operational readiness of their vehicles and Abrams tank fleet.

In addition, the sale will contribute to the US's foreign policy and national security by enhancing security for Saudi Arabia, which continues to serve as an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle Eastern region.

Information about the prime contractors was not disclosed, but it is widely believed that BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) and AM General, which provide similar items to US military, would be contracted for the FMS programme, as reported by Defense Industry Daily.

Manufactured by GDLS, the M1A2 is an upgraded variant of the M1A1 Abrams MBT and features a commander's independent thermal viewer, weapon station, position navigation equipment, a full set of controls and displays, as well as an enhanced fire control system.

The M-2/M-3 Bradley is a heavy-fighting vehicle designed to transport infantry on the battlefield with armour protection, while providing covering fire to suppress enemy troops and armoured vehicles.

Hmmm interesting SA version of Abrams. any details on what features are going to be installed?

Do they really need more tanks? Few years back Patria sold 36 Nemo turrets to SA and it caused huge discussions and debate here, as the weapons might be used against civilians in case of civil unrest, which is highly possible in the middle-east at the time.

A quote from an english news site: "Verkkouutiset said politicians from the Social Democrats and the Green party had raised questions about whether the mortars could at some stage be used against civilians, as pro-democracy uprisings continue to sweep across the Arab world."

They are not new, they are used tanks that are refitted. The factory of Abrams has closed long time ago.
