ISLAMABAD: Around 68.4 percent work has already been completed on the ongoing 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHP) and all out efforts are being made to complete in its schedule time 2016.
Managing Director NJHP Lt Gen (R) Zulfikar told APP here Wednesday that an amount of Rs.136 billion has been spent on the project so far.
"We have received Rs.36.5 billion under the head of Neelum-Jhelum surcharge adding that in next two years around Rs.21-22 billion more is expected to received under the same head," the MD said.
He said that first unit of the project would start generating in 2016 subject to timely release of required funds to the project.
Gen Zubair said that 3rd diversion stage at dam site would be also be completed by April adding that the C-1 site of power house was also 100 per cent completed.
He said that work on the project was being carried out in full swing and upon completion, Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project would contribute 5.15 billion units of cheap electricity to the national grid.
The annual benefits accruing from the project have been estimated at Rs.45 billion.
Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project (NJHEP) is located in the vicinity Muzaffarabad. It envisages the diversion of Neelum River water through a tunnel out-falling into Jhelum River. The intake Neelum-Jhelum is at Nauseri 41km east of Muzaffarabad and has installed capacity of 969 MW.
The project was an important project for generation of low-cost and the government was exploring all possible avenues to solve the energy crisis.
The government is also focusing on optimum development of renewable sources of energy particularly hydel, coal, wind, solar and biomass.
WAPDA was also working on a three-pronged strategy to harness the hydropower potential in the country under the directions of the federal government.
