60th Anniversary observed by India China Friendship Association
India China Friendship Association, West Bengal State Committee held a meeting on 9th October 2009 to observe the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China at Darbhanga Hall of the University of Calcutta. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Association Dr. Saroj Mohan Mitra. Mr. Mao Siwei, the Consul General of China in Kolkata was the Chief Guest. The Vice-Chancellors of Calcutta University and Rabindra Bharati University were also present as Special Guests. The Deputy Consul General of China in Kolkata, Mr. Zhang Tiejian, was also present.
While giving the welcome address Prof. Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University highlighted the long relationship between India and China. He emphasized the necessity of collaborative programmes between Calcutta University and Chinese Universities with a view to strengthening the knowledge-base not only from the academic point of view but also for knowing each other intimately. Prof. Das mentioned how China is exploiting the positive components of globalization while fighting against it. Prof. Karunasindhu Das, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University also gave emphasis on learning from each other for mutual benefit. He discussed in short how the Nobel-Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore was associated with China. He said that in the present scenario the relevance of collaboration still exists.
In his speech Mr. Mao Siwei mentioned in unequivocal terms that the Chinese Government and the people of China are keen to strengthen the relationship. He said that the friendship between the two countries has a long history and it covers not only the cultural aspect but also the economic and social relations.
In his speech the Deputy Consul General of China said that they have in their realization that as developing country with the largest population in the world, China still has a long way to go. He emphatically said that they will firmly and continuously stick to path of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, adhere to the policy of reform and opening up and at the same time will continue the policy of further deepening China-India relation.
The Vice President of India China Friendship Association, West Bengal State Committee Sri Rabin Deb described the campaign regarding border dispute to be a baseless one and said that we have to remain alert and cautious, because the imperialist forces would try to isolate and malign China with a view to breaking the unity of these two great countries. They know it very well that the friendship between these two countries can go a long way, which may cause threat to imperialism.
Dr. Saroj Mohan Mitra handed over the bulletins of ICFA, West Bengal State Committee to Mr. Mao Siwei. The current number of the bulletin was formally released by Mr. Mao Siwei.
The programme started with the opening song by Smt. Minakshi Sinha. Sri Suvendu Maity and Sri Saibal Dey saluted the anniversary with their songs. Sri Rajat Bandyopadhyay read out two poems written by Lu Xun and Mao Zedong. The Secretary of the association Dr. Debabrata Chaudhury proposed the vote of thanks.
