AURANGABAD: About 60,000 youths across nine districts in the region are competing for 1,000 posts in Indian army for which a mega recruitment drive began on July 22. The candidates have to clear various checks, including physical and medical tests.

On an average, about 8,000 candidates from nine districts including Aurangabad, Jalna, Hingoli, Nanded, Nadurbar, Jalgaon, Parbhani, Buldhana and Dhule are appearing in the various rounds of the recruitment process every day. The army began its annual recruitment drive at divisional sport complex in Garkheda.

"There has been an overwhelming response to the recruitment drive. We are witnessing large number of youths every day," said Colonel Sameer Choudhary, the recruitment officer, adding that there is only one centre for all these districts.

Candidates aged between 17.5 years and 23 years are eligible to participate in the drive. "However, we have about 1,000 vacancies to be filled during the drive. With the number of youths participating, we are expecting about 60,000 candidates to appear during the 15-day drive. It seems that there will be tough competition," he said.

Army officials said it takes at least two days to complete the physical and medical test of each candidate. Those who clear these two tests have to appear for written examination. The final result of the testes will be declared in October and the selected candidates will join the army in December 2015.

"Although, the army is now conducting open recruitment drive in Aurangabad, very soon an online recruitment system will be put in place. Army is already implementing it in some locations. The new system will shortlist the candidates online and we will call a select lot for the next round. It will also reduce burden on the local authorities as the number of applicants will reduce significantly," he said.

In recently held SBI PO exam, 30 lakhs appeared for just 2000 posts.

Are these soldiers?
The situation is almost same in Pakistan for a PMA Long Course. Each batch has only 600 seats more or less. Whereas applicants number in dozens of thousands.

The main problem is to many people

The Indian military choses to reject the vast majority of the candidates and not to lower their standards hence the shortfall.
then isn't it worrying that a country as big as ours fails to meet those standards ?

A lot of developed nations have an issue in attracting top talent to their armed forces and this often means they have to lower the bar in order to plug the gaps- this is certainly what the US Mil has done.

I'm not saying India is a developed nation but it faces the same issue thanks to the private sector in India offering a very lucrative and rewarding career option for a lot of Indians who the Indian Mil would like to recruit. The Indian Mil has not resorted to lowering the selection criteria hence the shortfall, instead they are taking a long term approach by trying to make a career in the armed forces more attractive to those it would like to recruit and also increasing the capacity of its training academies to train more personnel.

yeah, the lack of interest among some of our best to enlist, thanks to other more lucrative opportunities in the economy.. that's what I was alluding to.. not good.

They have a machine which measures the level of hate towards India. Those who hate more gets selected!!:D
hate is only half of it, sir, the other half is the big money they make.. here its doctors and lawyers, in Pak its the kernals and gernails who live the good life.

Shows the desperation of Indians due to bad living conditions and unemployment.

It's obvious rom the article itself. These guys would starve if they don't get into Indian army...

India should practice population control.
