The second day of China's national holiday sees tickets to the Palace Muesum sell out within 2 hours of opening.

Only last Thursday did the Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, open up more areas to the public.

The Museum has 20,000 entry tickets available per day, and combined with the Chinese holidays, the rush to see the unexplored sections of the Palace Musuem saw tickets sell out within 2 hours on Sunday.

The Palace Museum is the world's most visited museum. According to China Daily, in 2014 the museum recorded over 15 million visitors, followed by the Louvre in Paris with over 9 million visitors.

Crowds of visitors to tourist attractions is not uncommon during holidays in China. Altogether 104 million people visited tourist attractions around the country on Sunday, according to figures released by China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).

Tourist trips, revenue hit record high during National Day holiday


Tourist visits and spending hit record high as millions of Chinese went on a travelling spree during the week-long National Day holiday, latest official data showed.

Altogether 593 million people visited tourist attractions around the country from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7, up 12.8 percent year on year, according to figures released by China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).

Nationwide tourist spending rose 14.4 percent year on year to 482.2billion yuan (72.3 billion U.S. dollars) during this period, the CNTA said.

Railways carried 108 million passengers during the past ten days, up 9.3 percent year on year while airlines transported 9.96 million passengers in the past week, up 11.6 percent year on year, according to railway and civil aviation authorities.

For domestic trips, tourist attractions in provinces along the Belt and Road Initiative saw surging visits. North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region saw its tourist visits rise by 21.49 percent year on year while tourist spending in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region gained 42 percent year on year.

Chinese spending on shopping, food hit record high during National Day holiday

Chinese spent a record high sum of money on shopping and food during the past week-long National Day holiday, according to the Ministry of Commerce on Friday.

Enterprises in the retail and catering sectors raked in about 1.2 trillion yuan ($180 billion) from Oct 1 to Oct 7, up 10.7 percent, MOC data showed.

This was the second consecutive year for the "Golden Week" to see over one trillion yuan spending in retail and catering consumption since 1999.

West China's Chongqing Municipality and Sichuan Province and central China's Hunan Province were the top three regions seeing booming retail and catering business.

In breakdown, gold and jewelry, home appliances, IT products and new energy vehicles were the most popular goods, while banquets celebrating wedding, birthday and home reunion were the major contributors to catering services.
