54 Indian soldiers believed to be in Pakistani jails: Manohar Parrikar - IBNLive
Dec 19, 2014 at 10:02pm IST

New Delhi: At least 54 missing defence personnel of 1965 and 1971 wars are believed to be in custody in Pakistan, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told Parliament on Friday.

However, Pakistan does not acknowledge the presence of any such personnel.

"Fifty four (54) missing defence personnel of 1965 and 1971 wars, including one from Border Security Force, are believed to be in custody in Pakistan," Parrikar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

"The government has repeatedly been taking up the matter with the Pakistan government. However, Pakistan does not acknowledge the presence of any such personnel in its custody," he said.

Parrikar said a delegation of 14 relatives of missing defence personnel also visited 10 jails in Pakistan during 1-14 June, 2007 but could "not conclusively confirm the physical presence of any missing defence personnel".

The minister added that Gujarat High Court passed an order, regarding payment of service and retirement benefits to the next of kin of the missing defence personnel believed to be in the custody in Pakistan, as if they retired on superannuation.

"The order of the Hon'ble Court has been accepted by the government and necessary action has been taken towards compliance of the judgment," he added.

Man can you not request for their return, formally?
Ahh.... some times these red tape delays are beyond belief.

The government has repeatedly been taking up the matter with the Pakistan government.

Media do have a role to play and here this only is happening.

at this time, few would have survived.. In fact in many cases, pakistan wouldnt know it had them. Sometimes pows were actually put in regular civvie prisons and later forgotten about due to obvious reasons, according to some accounts.. Even if they are alive..which is highly unlikely, it will be next to impossible to trace them

I think we should simply swap all the prisoners with them. Time has gone by. We must send their people back and get our folks back.

do you think, at this hour they will even release any Indian? I don't think so.

Then we must do something to get them back.

Otherwise Parikkar is as useless as the other losers who were there before him in his place.

He should sit in consultation with Ajit Doval who knows the ins and outs of that country.

There must be some way of getting our soldiers back alive.
